What do you think, how common is domestic violence? It happens only in the lower income strata of the society, the middle classes would say. Oh no, it happens only among the uneducated, our civil society would say. But the truth is domestic violence happens anywhere, behind closed doors. It could be your neighbour, your relative, your friend. 

A horrifying video has surfaced that shows a Delhi High Court lawyer ruthlessly beating his daughter. The family belongs to a posh area in Vasant Kunj. The video, that was shot by the other daughter, shows him mercilessly beating his daughter.

According to his wife, he has tortured and abused her and their two daughters for the past 15 years, the reason being the absence of a son. The wife also said that she had sought help from the police earlier but was given no assistance. The video has now been handed over to the police and a case has been registered, but only after a video evidence was collected which is now going viral. 

Hundreds of such cases go unreported in our country on a daily basis. And even if reported, the victims often don’t get help because of lack of evidence or callousness of authorities. This case just goes on to prove how domestic violence is not limited to a particular class or region. Even the so-called elite who roam around in expensive cars and dine at fancy restaurants could have an ugly reality like this. It’s time we look at the dirt behind the glitter.
