Sometimes, it's better to be a gracious loser than to be a vicious winner. And especially when you're someone like Cheteshwar Pujara, who is renowned for his honesty both on and off the cricket field.
Despite taking Saurashtra to the final by scoring a blistering 131, Pujara was booed by the crowd as a 'cheater'. After grabbing the man of the series in last month's epic triumph over the Aussies it was a complete shocker to see Pujara get booed on his home ground.
This happened on the second day of the match when Pujara had gloved a threatening delivery from Abhimanyu Mithun. The opponents started to celebrate but the batsman didn't leave his crease thanks to Saiyed Khalid, the umpire who didn't hear the edge.January 27, 2019
And to make the narrative more dramatic, the same incident occurred again in the second innings, when Pujara was on 29 and this time, with Vinay Kumar on the balling end. Moreover, he went on to score an unbeaten century and carried Saurashtra on his shoulders to the Finals by beating Karnataka.
Everything has limits. It was second time in the match that he nicked a ball to the keeper. And collectively third umpiring error against Karnataka. And fourth one in whole match...#RanjiTrophy #KARvSAU #Pujara pic.twitter.com/pY1gv2g7p7— Cricfan ð (@Cricfan007) January 27, 2019
However, when you've earned the status of the 'Second Wall', then you've got to stand by it as well. And that is something Pujara missed out on in this clash.
This incident not only irked Karnataka supporters, but also led to his own fans turning on him. Here are some reactions where people bashed Pujara:
Sorry Pujara you have lost our respect... Yes it was not by rules, but you could have shown some dignity. Because people idolizes you to the greats. **** the spirit of sportsmanship...
Dear @BCCI shame on you... #KARvSAU #RanjiTrophy #Pujara
#cheteshwarpujara you are an asshole ...you lost all the respect wat v ad ....You are not at all a cricket you are #cheaterPujara .. no and never compare this stupid with Dravid .. o man wat a cheat ....
Middle finger to umpire and @cheteshwar1 #RanjiTrophy
Just lost all the respect on @cheteshwar1. You're a mere Pujara and you can never be compared with the great Dravid. Nicking it to keeper twice in 2 innings and still not walking. What a shame! @BCCI #KARvSAU #RanjiTrophy— rahul patil (@rahulpa19963622) January 27, 2019
