Just a few months ago, Disney fired James Gunn, the director of both the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies, and that too very famously, might I add.
It was all because of a bunch of problematic tweets by the director and despite the outpouring support from fans and the cast of GOTG, Disney stayed firm in their decision. But, that was months ago and so much can happen in that time. Well, he got rehired.
Today, James Gunn tweeted a message thanking everyone for all the support they have shown for him.March 15, 2019
While a lot of people are happy that he's back to direct the third GOTG movie, a lot of people have also shown their disapproval of Disney basically backtracking.
People are divided over this development and a lot of them are calling out Disney for just waiting for the controversy to die down so they could hire him again.
They did lie, tho.
disney explicitly saying that they were not going to rehire james gunn but then just waiting a few months for the whole situation to die down is so disgusting— saz (@syndullatano) March 15, 2019
The jokes were not okay.
even if they were just 'jokes' (which it's much more than that anyway) this behaviour is what leads to the normalisation of these awful things happening in real life and someone like james gunn shouldn't be given a platform like that in any circumstance— saz (@syndullatano) March 15, 2019
Some people are willing to give him a second chance.
I'm not exactly a fan of James Gunn's movies or their messages. And making jokes about sexual abuse is harmful because it contributes to rape culture. However, it's imperative we allow people space to grow and change! It appears Gunn has sincerely learned from his past mistakes. https://t.co/dh8iIBsPbL— Jonathan McIntosh (@radicalbytes) March 15, 2019
Do people change so easily?
Disney re-hires James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy 3!
The controversy was real (and understandable IMO) but I agree there needs to be a way for "redemption" for people like Gunn who have shown remorse and proven over *years* they are not the person those tweets were painting. https://t.co/3UnFLHJLYo
But, is an apology enough?
I am incredibly happy about this. Gunn said some Fucked up shit. He was also taken to task about it during GotG vol 1 and apologized. I am cool with punishing people for shit. I HATE double jeopardy. Glad to see this. https://t.co/JNcQ9FLzvx— Ben ðð ðð¦ (@BeninBiloxi) March 15, 2019
I understand if you don't like this and disagree. Trust me I get it. I'm not gonna become a James Gunn stan account but yes I do believe what he said is forgivable. If it ever turns out he really has ever hurt children I'll pour the gasoline FOR you and light the match.— Ben ðð ðð¦ (@BeninBiloxi) March 15, 2019
Let's hope so.
this whole situation is very complicated because he wasn't a teenager talking shit on the internet, he was a grown man... but he also apologized more than once. also, the cast is so loyal to him, it makes me think he indeed changed and is a better, decent human being +— ananda (@pilotdanvers) March 15, 2019
Yes, it is.
it just feels cheap of marvel/disney dismissing him and then rehiring him less than a year later and even accepting his terms of directing ss2 first... like? much to think about— ananda (@pilotdanvers) March 15, 2019
Dave Bautista would be happy.
A lot of us stood by #JamesGunn when all this shit went down. The whole cast stood by him, but no one, not one person, did so more than @DaveBautista who I hope feels vindicated tonight.
Watching him stand by his friend was incredibly touching.
And now we all get GotG vol.3!
James Gunn is back on Guardians 3. Bautista must've been standing outside Bob Iger's house like pic.twitter.com/JSTDTa3HmZ— Issa Deadman (@CPerry404) March 15, 2019
The #RehireJamesGunn worked, even though Disney confirmed it like 3 times in a row that that wouldn't happen. I even told some people online that it wasn't worth it.
So if that can happen, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut @wbpictures @WBHomeEnt !!!!!
Everyone's happy, I guess.
The best thing about this story, besides him getting a second chance, is that he's still going to do both films. https://t.co/zjnDNtTps1— Mike (Insert Game Here) (@mpallard329) March 15, 2019
