Andre Russell Continues To Prove His Credentials As Indian Premier League's Best All-Rounder

A batsman who smacks the ball hard enough to make the inanimate thing scream for mercy and then generates even more pace with the ball in his hands, Andre Russell is undeniably one of the best all-rounders in limited-overs cricket. And, that's exactly why Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) retained him ahead of the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Auctions earlier this year.

Repaying the faith of his employers, the West Indian powerhouse played a pivotal role in KKR's six-wicket triumph over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their opening encounter. The Jamaican cricketer took two wickets - David Warner and Yusuf Pathan, but it was arguably his unbeaten 19-ball 49 that stole the show.

After making his intentions pretty clear with a fine showing in the opening match, Russell continued to terrorise opposition bowlers with a blistering 17-ball 48 during KKR's 28-run triumph over Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on 27th March. If his destructive batting brought the home crowd to its feet, Russell's impressive figures of 2-21 with the ball helped his side get the better of the visitors.

Such has been Russell's consistency as an all-rounder that it also helped him bag consecutive 'Man of the Match' awards in the ongoing IPL season. Owing to his match-winning performances in the two games he has played so far, Russell has occupied the third place - only behind Imran Tahir (4 wickets) and Dwayne Bravo (4 wickets) - in the list of leading wicket-takers (Purple Cap) this season.

When it comes to the list of leading run-getters, Russell is looking menacing at the fifth spot with 97 runs in two games so far. Nitish Rana is currently the 'Orange Cap' holder with 131 runs to his name. The KKR batsman is followed by Delhi Capitals (DC) batting sensation Rishabh Pant (103 runs) and teammate Robin Uthappa (102 runs) in the coveted list.

Going by his raging form, Kolkata will hope Russell continues to build on his dream start in the tournament when they visit the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium to take on Delhi in what promises to be a pulsating encounter on 30th March.
