Drone Delivers Life-Saving Kidney To A Woman Who Waited 8 Years For A Transplant

The idea of delivering something over drones seemed impossible a few years ago. But with the ability to reach inaccessible places that are either too dangerous or very expensive, drone delivery has proven its worth time and again over the years.

On the same lines, a custom-made drone has delivered a life-saving kidney to a woman who waited 8 years for a transplant. That's right, a Baltimore woman is now the proud owner of a kidney, which was the first organ to be delivered via a drone. It was a successful transplant, so, yet another successful delivery in the books. Yay!

The kidney was flown via a custom-made drone with eight rotors. The kidney was kept is a special cooler and it was flown from a location in West Baltimore a few miles to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), where it was successfully implanted in a 44-year-old woman. The fact that the delivery helped a woman who had spent the previous eight years on dialysis makes it all the more special.

It's worth pointing out that teams from UMMC had previously shown that an organ could be transported via a drone. However, this was the first time an organ was implanted successfully after a flight. The flight only last for about 10 minutes.

“This whole thing is amazing,” the 44-year-old woman said. "Years ago, this was not something that you would think about."

The project was led by Joseph Scalea, who was also one of the surgeons who performed the transplant. He believes that drone delivery can streamline the system of getting organs to patients. According to him, shaving a few hours off the delivery time of organs could mean that up to 2,500 more such organs become viable for implantation.

Of course, drone delivery as a trustworthy method of transportation still needs a lot of work, but we truly believe that this is a good start.
