Akshay Kumar Confirming He Holds A Canadian Passport Has Sparked A Debate About His Patriotism

Akshay Kumar has always been the most vocal actor when it comes to showing patriotism. I mean, just take a look at his movies and you'll see how much he loves India - or, at least, is trying very hard to prove that.

But, if someone loves their country so much as he claims to do, then why would they give up being a citizen of that country for another one? This is not me questioning, but a lot of people online and they still don't have answers.

Recently, Akshay Kumar was asked why he didn't vote and he had a little unexpected reaction.

After that, he took to Twitter to share a long post explaining how he never denied that he holds a Canadian passport. He also made sure to say that he works in India, pays taxes in India, and is disappointed his citizenship is always being questioned by the media.

He also said that this a matter of no consequence to others but another question comes up with that. While he has no qualms in hanging out with the Prime Minister of the very country he let go of in favour of another, he's showing support for a party that is demanding so many other people living in the country to prove their citizenship. Moreover, if he has never needed to prove his love for India, why did he choose Canada over it? There are no duel citizenships here, so he can't be both Canadian and Indian.

His tweet has divided people, while a lot of people are in favour of him and support him, there are so many people questioning the authenticity of his patriotism. If he's not even Indian, there's a possibility it could just be manufactured for commercial reasons aka the long list of patriotic movies that he has done.

Actually yes, the citizenship wouldn't even be that big of an issue if he didn't publicize his patriotism so much, didn't allign himself to a party and promote it so openly, basically didn't get so involved in politics when he himself can't even vote.

Oh, another clip has resurfaced as well.

Well.

No one cares about your citizenship until you align yourself with fascists who distribute patriotism certificates to the others. Sonia Gandhi has voluntarily taken up Indian citizenship and she receives the most vile misogynist nonsense for being an “Italian” from those fascists.

Wow.

So @akshaykumar who exploits hyper-nationalism of the gullible, rubbing shoulders with majoritarian fascist outfits, has taken this oath of allegiance while becoming citizen of Canada, to defend Canada in a potential war situation with India. lulz. pic.twitter.com/jq3wxbXDDu

Good question.

As a Canadian citizen you can live in India, work here, pay taxes without visiting Canada and still remain a Canadian citizen. A luxury that I as an Indian don't have. If you didn't need to prove your love for India, why be embarrassed about holding a Canadian passport?

— Rupa Subramanya (@rupasubramanya) May 3, 2019

Exactly.

True, no one should question your citizenship. Nor should you have to prove your nationalism cause you hold a Canadian passport. Now spare a thought for those who are Indian citizens but have to provide proof of their nationalism every day just because they are Muslim or anti-BJP

An ancient meme.

Yep.

#AkshayKumar's citizenship would not have been such an issue had he not patronised the reporter in such a condescending manner. Much of #Bollywood is so used to a docile media and choreographed interviews, that all it takes is one unscripted question!

— Viju Cherian (@vijucherian) May 3, 2019

All valid stuff.

So @akshaykumar why did you choose to be a Canadian rather than an Indian citizen? When you said being granted Canadian citizenship was a matter of pride, do you mean you value it more than Indian citizenship? Why do Modi & Co let you off the loyalty tests they set for others? https://t.co/BFllC6cFAZ

— Kavita Krishnan (@kavita_krishnan) May 3, 2019

Important.

Relax @akshaykumar, the banter on your nationality is completely APOLITICAL.

Also can you please tell us, Canada mein 'aam' kaise khaate hain??? https://t.co/jF8gqJPJAb

— Abhijeet Dipke (@abhijeet_dipke) May 3, 2019

He himself has created so much confusion.

The issue is of obfuscation of facts. Were you ever given 'honorary' citizenship of Canada as you'd stated in an interview? Now it seems like you've chosen to be a Canadian citizen with nothing 'honorary' about it. Did you lie in your interview? https://t.co/ZGr0bBRR7P
