An animal rights activist is asking us to stop referring to animals as 'pets', as the terminology is derogatory and we love the idea behind it! Yes, while mistreating animals was always an issue within the confines of animal welfare, now using proper and appropriate terminology is also a must, especially for the pets.
Ingrid Newkirk, a 70-year-old animal activist, who co-founded PETA (People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals), with fellow activist Alex Pacheco, says calling animals 'pets' is just like calling women 'honey', 'sweetie' or 'baby'.
"Animals are not pets - they are not your cheap burglar alarm or something which allows you to go out for a walk. They are not ours as decorations or toys, they are living beings. "she told a popular entertainment publication.
