Sunil Gavaskar Slams England Analyst For Using Placards To Instruct Captain On The Field

Over the years, cricket, as a sport, has evolved both in terms of regulations and tactics.Β

In the modern era of the sport, cricketers, amid noticeable changes in the game, have also changed the way they approach cricket. That's probably why we continue to be amazed by the antics in the gentleman's game.

One such incident occurred recently, where something quite bizarre caught everyone's attention.Β

During the 2nd T20I against South Africa, England's analyst Nathan Leamon was seen hanging a series of letters and numbers from the dressing-room balcony to help captain Eoin Morgan set the field.

Signals sent from an analyst on a balcony to the captain on the pitch !!!! The world has officially gone nuts !!! #SAvENG #OnOn

While the use of England's tactic was cleared by the match referee and the International Cricket Council's (ICC's) anti-corruption unit, the weird move has attracted a fair share of criticism.Β

Former England captain Michael Vaughan took to Twitter and opined: "Signals sent from an analyst on a balcony to the captain on the pitch !!!! The world has officially gone nuts!!!".

Echoing similar sentiments, Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar, too, slammed England's tactic.

"Ideally, as a captain, I would not like this thing to happen. If I was the captain, I would say, look if you want to send a message about any field placing or a bowling change, then send the 12th man across with a bottle of water or anything...a way you can pass the message or the 12th man or the coach can pass the message to the boundary fielder," Gavaskar said on the Cricket Connected Show.

This isn't the first time when Leamon had used coded messages to help players on the field.Β

Earlier this year, as part of Multan Sultans camp in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Leamon was seen using hand signals to help in the field settings for the team.
