OnePlus will finally launch its own smartwatch in 2021 as confirmed by CEO Pete Lau on Twitter. The company will be making a foray into wearables for the first time but there aren’t any more details available about the upcoming device. There have been rumours that the smartwatch will work on Google’s WearOS but it is still uncertain what operating system the smartwatch will use.

The date for the launch of the smartwatch has not been set but there is a good chance it might launch alongside the OnePlus 9 next year. OnePlus has been experimenting with a smartwatch for years, “We had completed the design but we still decided to scrap it,” Lau said in an interview with Wall Street Journal. “We have to be focused” he added.

OnePlus has been taking baby steps and launching products beyond smartphones such as the new OnePlus TWS earphones. The company was also said to be working on a power bank but we haven’t seen any more news on that front yet.

OnePlus launching a new smartwatch isn’t that surprising as its sister company OPPO launched its own Oppo Watch earlier this year. The two companies have adopted similar strategies in the past including sharing smartphone designs since both companies are owned by the massive conglomerate BBK Electronics. It could be possible that the OnePlus watch might take some inspiration from the Oppo Watch but we will know more once it is revealed by the company next year.
