The 2020-2021 Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia was nothing short of a Bollywood flick. There was action, suspense, sadness, crisis, and a happy ending viewers will remember for years to come.

Amid so many things that were happening, one of the biggest talking points of the series was how the Indian cricket team was losing their top men to injuries one after the another and yet someone managed to keep their chances of winning it all alive, somehow.

In the third of four Test matches, which was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, an already crippled Men in Blue squad lost their best all-rounder in Ravichandran Ashwin, who despite waking up with a severe back pain, according to his wife Prithi Ashwin’s tweet, played a heroic knock and brought the contest to a draw.

Batting alongside Hanuma Vihari, who had also pulled his hamstring and was in no shape to run across the pitch, Ashwin was clearly in a lot of pain as he defended one delivery after another. On the final day of the Sydney Test, the off-spinner even got struck in the ribs, making matters worse.

The man went to bed last night with a terrible back tweak and in unbelievable pain. He could not stand up straight when he woke up this morning. Could not bend down to tie his shoe laces. I am amazed at what @ashwinravi99 pulled off today.

Despite the pain and suffering, Ajinkya Rahane and the Men in Blue could have used the experience and the all-round prowess of the 34-year-old while facing the Australians at the Brisbane Cricket Ground, the stadium where they had not lost a single match in the past 33 years.

But the strict protocols being followed in the city as a safety measure against the coronavirus prevented the cricketer from working on his rehabilitation, forcing him to be on the sidelines as his broken team limped towards the Herculean series-decider.

“It was looking good for the fourth Test, it looked like I would play. But there was an unfortunate turn of events. Even pool access was cut. The pool is an important activity in the recovery process. The physio also felt if the recovery process was in place, there was a good chance to play. It was a freakish injury,” said R Ashwin as quoted by The New Indian Express.

Thankfully, the taped up squad that Rahane led into the Gabba proved to be enough to not only go toe-to-toe with the fully loaded hosts but even defeating them at what was supposed to be their unbreachable fortress.

India broke the 33-year streak, won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for a second consecutive time and brought the prestigious cup back home once again.
