Aussies Benefit If India-Eng Series Ends In Draw, Will Mess Up World Test Championship For Us

After a long and complicated couple of years of international red-ball cricket, the International Cricket Council has finally given the official dates for the finals of the World Test Championship - June 18 to June 22, which will take place at Lord's cricket ground in London.

Based on the Points Table provided by the global organisation, the Indian cricket team is currently in the lead with 430 points over the last 13 matches they played in five series, having won 9, lost 3 and ended in a solitary draw.

If Australia hadn't been docked four points for a slow over-rate in the Boxing Day Test against India, they would be above New Zealand in the World Test Championship table pic.twitter.com/0BSgad8xSi

However, with Australia’s decision to pull out of the Test series in South Africa, Team New Zealand, albeit with 10 points fewer than India, have already qualified for one of two spots in the final.

This essentially means that the upcoming series between India and England becomes the single most important event during the course of the tournament and its result will decide which team among India, England and Australia will move on to the final match-up against Kane Williamson’s men.

Now #world_test_championship is like #IPL where the teams low on points table depend upon the results of other teams🤣🤣 #India have a upper hand #Eng can turn their fortunes #Aus is like Rcb completely depending on other team pic.twitter.com/oHz0YOnEF2

Despite the simple math, the complications have occured because the ICC has now decided to decide the standings on the basis of the percentage of points won by each team. Even though India currently leads in the points percentage as well (71.7%) as compared to the Kiwis (70%), it is bound to change with the inception of the series on February 5.

Australia and England are in the third and fourth spot with 69.2% and 68.7%, respectively.

What are the three possible outcomes out of the India-England Test series?

The official Twitter handle of the ICC broke it down for us:

The fans of the Men in Blue were not the happiest upon learning the situation and have been expressing their discontent with the tournament and with the Australian side:

@CricketAus made a good move. If they lost series against @OfficialCSA there will be no chance to them to play test championship finals. (Now the @CricketAus facing some internal issues between coach and players. I don't think they win against @OfficialCSA in present situation)
