Created by Lipstick Under My Burkha fame, the acclaimed Alankrita Shrivastava, Bombay Begums explores the story of five ambitious women who are from various walks of life and how they navigate dreams, fulfill their desires and handle disappointments in modern-day Mumbai. The show marks Pooja Bhatt's comeback on screen after a long gap and stars Shahana Goswami, Amruta Subhash, Plabita Borthakur, Aadhya Anand, and Rahul Bose in the pivotal roles.
Bhatt is seen playing the role of Rani, a middle-aged CEO of a bank who is mentally strong but also has her own insecurities to deal with. The last time Bhatt appeared in a lead role onscreen was in Mahesh Bhatt’s 1998 film Zakhm.
While people loved Pooja’s performance, they had issues with the content. People are bashing the show for its content that shows feminism in a certain light and are also raising objections about a particular scene wherein a teenager is seen consuming drugs.
They also added that how Bollywood is obsessed with women on periods, ***, and pseudo relationships. People also felt that it wasn’t empowering enough and somewhere showed men as evil.
Here are the reactions:
#BombayBegums is utter trash. Ppl who liked this movie didn’t use the same logic for #KabirSingh. Nothing was empowering about this movie, showed most men as evil. Don’t know what was worse, the irritating narration thruout the show or the character Ayesha.
— Battata Wada (@BattataWadaa) March 10, 2021From normalisation of minors indulging in casual *** we now have web series showing minors having Cocaine.
Screengrab from #BombayBegums where a 13yr old is snorting coke as the party she goes to is all about alcohol, drugs.

I just finished watching #BombayBegums, with a sheer disappointment I'd like to mention a thing that Bollywood id extremely obsessed with women on periods, *** and pseudo relationships.
#BombayBegums undermines #feminism by showing how women heavily depend on men at every step of the way. It’s offensive to see how the show treats *** as the greatest tool in a woman’s arsenal. I am all for owning one’s sexuality but don’t make it all about it
— vibhuti arora (@AroraVibhuti) March 10, 2021Fatally flawed, deliriously trashy, I'm sticking it out with #BombayBegums on Netflix. Mainly due to the anchoring presence of Amruta Subhash as a tough ex-prostitute-turned-factory owner and to see if the series will create a record for the use of the words '****' and 'fucking' https://t.co/nJd1QqRdbW
— Robin Baker (@robinalexbaker) March 10, 2021In an interview with Spotboye, Pooja Bhatt shared why she took up the role after initially saying a no to it. She said, “I was quite taken aback when I got this role. I got this email out of the blue offering me the role. They sent me a very detailed brief. It was set in the world of banking and finance. I read the plot and I was like…wow! I was being offered the pivotal role. I loved Alankrita’s Lipstick Under The Burqa.”
Talking about how the show addresses female sexuality, she said, “My character is going through menopause and she is in complete denial about it. I love my first shot in the series where I am looking into the mirror. Women in our cinema are frozen in time. Very rarely is the process of aging in a woman discussed. I said no to a number of offers in the recent past because they expected me to play someone 10 years younger than I actually am. In Bombay Begums, I play 49 and I am 49 in real life. There are women protagonists of every age in Bombay Begums. There is a girl who is going through puberty and there’s a woman, me, who’s going through menopause. This is the kind of dream role that actresses beyond a certain age don’t get in our country.”
