One great thing about any faith or religion is the strength it provides in desperate and desolate times. The COVID pandemic has been one of those situations, especially for people who have been very closely affected by it.

However, things are now becoming a little too desperate for some, rising to the level of absurdity.
There have been several reports coming from various parts of India, that now, people have started worshipping “Corona Devi” to pacify and assuage the wrath of the SARS COVID virus.
Only in India, can something like this happen, at a time like this.

Residents of Coimbatore have now set up a temple just outside the city, “honouring” Goddess Corona Devi, so that it spares them from the deadly virus.
And if local authorities are to be believed, there is a good chance that it may work well for them.

Back in the early 1900s, during the deadly Spanish Influenza pandemic, the locals of Coimbatore started praying to the Goddess Thandu Mariamman, who is the Goddess Of Rain in their local pantheon.
After the pandemic died down, a temple was erected & consecrated in the land where the pujas were conducted. Today, it is known as the Plague Mariamman Temple.

The Corona Devi Temple was consecrated on Tuesday, and the locals said that they started offering prayer from Wednesday.
They plan to perform a ‘Maha Yagyam,’ or offer prayers daily, for the next 48 days. The Temple also has an idol of “Goddess Corona Devi,” which will be consecrated after the Maha Yagyam.
This isn’t the only instance where people have come together to ‘pray to the Goddess.’
People, across many states in India, have conducted pujas to please “Corona Devi.” These states include Gujarat, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, & Bengal.

While offering prayers to the virus isn’t exactly a new phenomenon, temples or shrines being made to pacify the virus is somewhat new this year.
This just shows how desperate and helpless people have become in today’s day and age, wherein they are forced to abandon sound reason and science.

Twitterati, sure, had a field day with this, with many claiming that this is nothing but a shameful money-minting scheme in desperate times like these.
