Indian Idol was among the most popular and much loved singing-based reality shows when it started in 2004. The first batch of contestants including Rahul Vaidya, Prajakta Shukre and the winner Abhijeet Sawant still remain unforgettable for the fans.

However, lately, the reality show has been entangled in a lot of controversies where former contestants and judges have disclosed the dirty secrets of the show and what goes behind the scenes. And, it is being criticised, mocked online and even questioned for its authenticity.

A few days ago, one of the contestants of the current season Indian Idol 12, Shanmukhapriya was heavily trolled for her singing style. Fans accused her for ruining the Bollywood classics by modifying them in her own style and snatching the essence of the soulful melodies.

She sang a rendition of Asha Bhosle’s ‘Chura Liya Hai’ recently, in which she included yodeling and fans were not impressed. Also, they accused the judges for being biased to her and praising her for no apparent reason.

Things turned nasty when a contestant that the audience loved, Anjali Gaikward was eliminated from the show last week. Fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment with the decision and demanded they bring her back.

Netizens believe that she was one of the finest classical singers and the most talented among the lot and evicting her over Shanmukhapriya and another contestant Danish was highly unfair. They bashed the show for it and wondered if there is any ‘reality’ left in the ‘reality show’.

While trolling Shanmukhapriya for her singing through memes isn’t the right way to express their disapproval for a contestant, they are not wrong to question the authenticity of the show.

After all, the audience's votes is one of the primary criteria for elimination for Indian Idol and if everyone wanted Anjali on the show, how come she got evicted?
