Sikh Character Appears In Pixar’s 'Turning Red' For First Time But People Aren’t Convinced

After getting praised for her short film, Bao, in 2018 and becoming the first woman to direct a Pixar short movie, the captain lady Domee Shi is back behind the lense and this time, it’s a full feature movie.

If you have seen Bao's earlier work, you'd know for a fact that her movie will be filled with metaphors. Her film is titled Turning Red and the makers have already dropped the trailer.

The story is about a 13-year-old girl named Mei Mei who turns into a red giant panda whenever she is stressed out. Interestingly, we all turn red with anger and the director has used that emotion wittily. She has shown how growing up isn’t easy and how teenagers deal with their outbursts of emotions.

Here’s the trailer:

The movie has been set in Toronto, Canada, which is also the hometown of the director of the movie. Interestingly, she has also taken care of the fact that her movie should have characters from different cultures.

It features a Sikh character who is seen playing the role of a school security guard where Mei Mei studies. In this particular scene, he is seen arguing with Mei Mei’s mom. The director has taken care of the detailing as he is seen wearing a navy-colored turban and a uniform. He is also seen wearing a ‘kada’.

But despite all this detailing, people aren’t convinced as they feel she has stereotyped the fact that all the Sikhs or Indians work as security guards or taxi drivers in foreign countries. They also want him to have a significant role and not just be the laughing stock.
