3 Arguments By Abhay Deol On Actors Not Playing Their Age & Romancing Girls In 20s Are Bang On

It’s bizarre to see men in their 50s are romancing women half their age on screen. All the viewers get to see actors like Salman Khan or Ajay Devgn or Shah Rukh Khan playing quite younger roles and it’s a common thing to see that they are cast opposite actresses who are more than 10 to 15 years younger than them.

Earlier Dia Mirza had shared her opinion on the widening age gap between actors and actresses. She had said, “The industry is male-dominated. Older men like to be cast alongside young actresses to extend their shelf life. It is extremely bizarre to see 50-year-old actors being cast opposite 19-year-old actresses.”

Now, Abhay Deol has raised his voice against this and he has always voiced his opinions on Bollywood’s biases and wrong-doings. Well, Abhay is playing a father to a teenage girl in his next venture, Disney's Spin.

Here are the three arguments that he shared in a conversation with Bollywood Life:

1. When asked if he has any qualms about playing a father on screen, he said that he is secure as an actor. He said, “If I had to have qualms about anything then I would have had them 10-12 years ago doing what I was doing in Bollywood. I have never really held back, I am quite secure in who I am and where I come from. The Netflix show that I am doing spans 20 years, I go from 39 to 59. I can play my age, I can play 10-12 years younger still, so I am just having fun.”

2. He said it’s okay to play your age and do roles that are within your age bracket. He said, “As long as people are convinced that I am doing that role whether at 35 or 45, I would like to do both. You just got to take care of yourself so that you can pass for the ages that you play. I would like to stick to that window.” There are actors who are touching their 50s but are still seen playing the characters in their 20s.

3. He also said that Bollywood is still casting older men opposite way younger actresses. “Bollywood still will cast actors who are in their 50s opposite girls who are in their 20s and not even make it about an older man and younger girl, they will make them look like as a couple. In that environment, what does it matter?,” said Abhay.
