  1. He is unfiltered, unapologetic, never shies away from putting forth his opinions and steers clear of the privilege that the 'Deol' tag offers him, particularly in his career. We are talking about none other than Abhay Deol here, the man who took his sweet time to carve a niche for himself in the industry, solely based on his acting prowess. View this post on Instagram While most actors were busy ensuring the fact that their box office scores kept soaring, we had Abhay on the other side, churning out meaningful stories with his power-packed performances. He is surely among the rare breed of sorted actors we have in the industry right now. Be it 'Dev D' or 'Aisha' or 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', Abhay has never failed to impress us with his brilliance in his craft. He has come a long way and invested into a beautiful house for himself in Goa in the midst of a forest. Abhay gave a home tour to the team of Asian Paints for their show Where The Heart Is. View this post on Instagram The outskirts of Abhay’s house looks like a greenhouse and the actor called his home a ‘a glass house in the middle of the forest’. He said, “It’s a plot in the middle of the forest. And I really wanted to basically bring the environment into the house. So it is essentially a glass house in a forest." © Asian Paints While giving the tour, he mentioned that he specified to his architect that he doesn’t want windows in the house but large sliding doors. He said. "So my brief to my architect was I don’t want any windows. I want opening doors, of glass, and ceiling so high that if I’m standing and looking at a person, I can’t even see the ceiling. That’s how high I want it." © Asian Paints © Asian Paints The dining area of the house is styled very simplistically. The granite and the dark wooded pattern look both elegant and royal. The house gives a rustic feel with dark granite flooring and wooden elements. His large living room provides a beautiful view of his front garden and the forest behind it. It’s this area where he loves hosting his guests. © Asian Paints © Asian Paints The kitchen of the house is also very minimalistic. Through the kitchen, you can also see the lush garden outside his house which is probably the setting of his home as you feel very close to nature in every nook and corner of the house. © Asian Paints © Asian Paints The house also offers a beautiful swimming pool area. © Asian Paints You can watch the full video of the house here: It’s a dream house if you want to step out of the hustle bustle of your city life. 2. Ever since he made his debut with Socha Na Tha, Abhay Deol proved he is unlike any other Deol the audience has ever seen on the big screen, be it performances, his choice of roles, his films or how he conducts himself in the media. The actor believes in speaking his mind and often finds himself in controversies. One such incident occurred back in 2012, days before the release of his maiden production venture One By Two. Attending the Screen Awards in 2012, Abhay walked the red carpet with a black eye catching everyone’s attention. When asked by the media if he’s alright and what actually happened to him. Abhay responded saying he isn’t doing fine and added, “Main music company se maar kha ke aa raha hoon (I have been beaten up by a music company).” © Facebook/Abhay Deol © Facebook/Abhay Deol He further said, “My film is releasing January 31. My music has not yet released because the music company wants me to get the composers Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy to sign a clause which is illegal.” He then revealed the music company is T-Series. Watch the video below: Later, Abhay had taken to his Facebook account and shared a few images of himself with the black eye. He also posted an open letter explaining the whole mess. A part of it read, “Well the entire music fraternity is up in arms against the record labels because they expect musicians to sign a contract with a clause that is against the law. Producers like myself are expected to make sure that they sign. Which means if anyone is arrested for breaking the law it will be the producer! I am also against the exploitation of artists. I believe in their rights and even if a musician was ready to sign it, I would advise him/her against it. As a result, I have no album in the market. In fact, now, I wouldn’t be surprised if the music company pulls out my promos from the TV channels. I don’t have radio play anyway.” © Facebook/Abhay Deol Check out the post below: T-Series later issued a lengthy statement in response to Abhay’s accusation. A part of their statement read, “We are disappointed that baseless allegations are being made against us in an arbitrary manner completely disregarding our legitimate and lawful concerns as a music label. We are well within our rights to call upon producers to provide us with appropriate agreements with composers, lyricists and singers as we cannot acquire any rights from a person who has none to begin with. In the absence thereof, we cannot be expected to release music when there is no clarity with respect to the rights granted to the producer.” © Viacom 18 Motion Pictures As for the film One By Two, it was released on its scheduled date amidst the controversy and failed at the box office. 3. Bollywood controversies are way too murkier than one can fathom and due to great PR strategies in place, we usually never get to see the dark side of the cinema world or it’s rare that we get to read about celebrity spats. However, that doesn’t mean that miscommunications or arguments don’t happen even between the most well-behaved celebrities. © Anil Kapoor Films Company Back when the Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol starrer Aisha was released, there was a buzz about the actor not being okay with the Kapoors, who were also the producers of the film. In an interview once, Abhay Deol spoke about how his film was supposed to be inspired by a Jane Austen novel but ended up becoming a 2-hour fashion show. He was apparently not happy with his role and the way the movie has turned out to be. The rumours of him being miffed were further fuelled when he was mostly absent from the film promotional activities, claiming he was filming ZNMD at that time. © Excel Entertainment In an interview with TOI, he said “I would like to say today that I will never ever be part of a film like Aisha in my lifetime. It’s not the kind of film I’d like to do." His co-star Sonam was upset at the remark and soon, a cold war began. When the father-duo came on Koffee With Karan in season 4, Anil Kapoor went on to say “Abhay Deol needs help”. On Karan asking in what way, he replied "in every way! There's something terribly wrong with the guy." © Star World The war of words further escalated when Abhay Deol made a comment on the statement. “He's right about me doing "all the wrong things". Aisha is the biggest proof of that. And yes I do "need help". Help not getting affected by people like him. He's a waste of my time." According to IBT Times, Abhay was also upset over the fact that the producers paid more attention to spending money on Sonam’s wardrobe over other aspects of the film. While the animosity was loud and clear post this film, fans were surprised when Abhay and Sonam worked together in Raanjhana. Guess that’s called being mature and professional. 4. Bollywood has long been home to various filmy dynasties. There exist the Kapoors, the Khans and the Dutts, among others. And the common assumption is that life is easy once you’re born into such a clan. Abhay Deol is from one such filmy gharana. The Deols are no spring chickens, their name has been held in high regard in Bollywood since the 60s, thanks to the cinematic exploits of their patriarch, Dharmendra (Dharam Deol). © Abhay Deol The Deols had come to espouse the tough, rugged men from Bollywood’s halcyon years. With Abhay’s cousins Bobby and Sunny toeing the line set by their father, Dharmendra. But, Abhay Deol has always been different from the rest of his tribe. Whether it be through his artistic choices or his outspoken, yet articulate public persona, the younger Deol seemed to be cut from a different kind of cloth. View this post on Instagram In a recent interview Abhay put words to his insecurities and revealed how he never reached out to cousins Sunny and Bobby Deol for professional help even when his career was suffering. The Dev.D actor has long forged a reputation as an experimental actor, the poster boy of alternative cinema in the 2000s. But as we all know, Bollywood often tends to reward formulaic, masala cinema, which Abhay finds little to no interest in, and thus he ended up with little to no work. View this post on Instagram Films like Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Dev.D and Manorama 6 Feet Under achieved cult status, but they weren’t the commercially viable cinema that the majority of Bollywood producers chased after. It was heartening to learn that Abhay Deol laid bare his diffidence in a recent interview with RJ Siddharth Kannan. He revealed how he used to view asking for help as a symptom of “weakness”, which is why he found it difficult to reach out to his cousins, Bobby and Sunny. He said, “I had always thought that to reach out is to be weak, handle it yourself. I no longer believe that, of course. But I think my lows were low because I never reached out to anyone. I always tried to handle things on my own.” Abhay does clarify that age has helped him change his perspective on such affairs, where he feels less pressure in asking for help. © Abhay Deol The Aisha actor said,“Now, the thing is, I’ve reached a point in my life where the highs and lows don’t affect me as much. Because I’ve been at it for a while. I’ve been on my own when I’ve been down low, and I’ve been on my own when I’ve been up high. All I know is that I don’t want to be on my own. That’s it. Being high, being low doesn’t matter. It’s just in communion, in community, having your tribe. I’ve been very fortunate. I met some wonderful people along the way. I have my community; some are family, some are friends like family.” More power to Abhay Deol for expressing his challenges with reaching out to help as it is something that the average desi guy faces as well. Keeping up a strong front is something that men in India are expressly encouraged to do. It’s time we left behind certain traditions in the past. View the full article
  5. Ever since Abhay Deol made his debut with Imtiaz Ali’s Socha Na Tha, he has always believed in delivering something unconventional each time he has come on board for a film. Some of his films that have attained a cult following over the years include Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Dev D, Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, Manorama Six Feet Under, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara etc. The actor who is quite choosy with his scripts has slowed down a bit in recent years, as far as his films are concerned. He was last seen in the 2020 Netflix film What Are The Odds which he also produced and is now returning to the big screen with Velle after the 2018 horror-comedy Nanu Ki Jaanu and his cameo in Zero. His upcoming film Velle marks his first collaboration with his nephew Karan Deol, who is the elder son of Abhay’s cousin brother Sunny Deol. © Ajay Devgn Ffilms Ahead of the film's release, we sat down with Abhay and Karan for a chat and pointed out about the hashtag that the former uses on Instagram, “#MakingWhatBollyWouldn’t” and how he was a major force in blurring the lines between mainstream and parallel cinema 10-15 years ago backing the kind of films that are considered mainstream today. Responding to it, Abhay told MensXP, “I hope I get to continue making such films. It is not easy. I hope that people continue to give me chances. But, the thing is, what I want to do today, it’s the same thing, it is ten years later. Because people are doing today, what I did 16 years ago. What I want to do today, they are not making it right now.” View this post on Instagram © Abhay Deol Instagram He further added that he is "bored" of what Bollywood is doing today and "what I want to do now is far more provocative. And it’s not the time for that because they have just come around to accept what I did more than a decade ago. So, now it’s hard for me because I want to repeat what I did with those movies but they are not going to take a chance because those movies are not being made right now. Now it’s harder because it’s all corporatised. So, hopefully I get a chance to do what I did earlier. There may be one, actually, no, there may be two of such films releasing next year.” View this post on Instagram We then asked Karan about how he perceived the kind of films his "Abhay chachu" was doing, he stated, “I loved his body of work. I loved Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, I loved Dev D, I loved Manorama Six Feet Under. I have seen everything he has done and I thoroughly loved it. It was brave what he was doing because no one was doing it at that moment of time. And that cinema, it connected with my generation. Like it really connected with us and it was a really brave and bold step. And he was brilliant in everything and I still see those films. They stood the test of time. You see any of his films today and it’s still relatable. Hats off to him for making those decisions and I would love to do what he has done. I will be fortunate to get those types of subjects.” © Karan Deol Instagram As for their film Velle, apart from Abhay and Karan, the movie also stars Anya Singh, Sawant Singh Premi, Vishesh Tiwari and Mouni Roy. Backed by Ajay Devgn and directed by Deven Munjal, Velle is an official Hindi remake of 2019 Telugu hit Brochevarevarura. The film is slated to hit the big screens on December 10. 6. Actor Abhay Deol, who has always been vocal about several matters regarding Bollywood, ventured into the film fraternity with the hit romantic comedy Socha Na Tha and then carved his own way with his sheer talent. While some think he didn't earn enough recognition, the actor has often been upfront about his star image. He has also asserted that he does not regret not having some sort of PR machinery, unlike other stars who use it as a tool to become famous. © Instagram/Abhay Deol While this is on the professional front, the actor has now opened up about his personal life as well. Abhay recently took to Instagram and shared pictures with Shilo Shiv Suleman. It looks like the actor just made his relationship official with her as he shared a few candid images on his feed. Shilo is a Bengaluru-based artist, and everyone in the comments started showering the couple with all the love. View this post on Instagram He captioned the image, "Fluid, free, flowing, creative, soothing, fun, fearless, sensual, calming, inspiring, dynamic, talented, sexy. Oh and @shiloshivsuleman is all of those things too! #tribe #community #artist #freespirits #thefearlesscollective." In the comments section, even Shilo replied, saying, "Nothing taboo on this table. More adventures soon!” © Instagram/Abhay Deol Other actors, including Esha Gupta, Monica Dogra etc. too took to the comments section and replied with emojis. View this post on Instagram Rumours of them dating started doing rounds when Abhay posted a few pictures of her exhibition and appreciated her artwork. He took to Instagram and wrote, "It was profound, it was transcendental, it was ethereal @shiloshivsuleman! You’re an amazing artist. 7. We all remember how Abhay Deol led actors Farhan Akhtar and Hrithik Roshan to really make our lives a lot more meaningful from the cinematic experience of Zoya Akhtar's 2011 film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Abhay along with the rest of the cast put in impressive performances to give us a movie about life and how we all need to embark on newer adventures to truly find out what we want in real life. © Netflix © Instagram/Abhay Deol Now, 10 years after the release of the wonderful movie, Farhan Akhtar has chosen to take the director's seat again in order to make another such film about three friends, this time with the star cast of Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Katrina Kaif, and Alia Bhatt. Produced by Excel Entertainment, the film titled Jee Le Zaraa will be a road trip film featuring three leading ladies in what looks like another take on the deeper meaning of life. View this post on Instagram As per reports, Abhay might actually end up doing a cameo in the film, a thing that will surely excite fans. Well, the actor himself had a say on the developments of the film and how the project has got great talent in its ranks. “It looks fun. It has got great talent behind and in front of the screen. It was exciting just to look at it. I don't know the story or the script. It just looks exciting,” said Abhay. The film has been written by Farhan, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti, and is set for a release in 2023. The actor was also asked about the chance of a cameo in the film, to which he had sort of mixed answers. “I don't think so. I'm not so big on cameos. If it's needed, then sure. I don't have a problem with them. But I don't think it's needed,” said Abhay. Well, let's be honest. We'd all love it if he and the rest of the gang join in the party. Farhan will be directing the film almost after a period of 10 years since he took up Don 2 starring Shah Rukh Khan. And we are really looking forward to this one. View the full article
  8. Abhay Deol has often spoken about several matters in Bollywood explicitly. The actor seems calm in real life and portrays the same sense even in his movies. The storylines he chooses are pretty underrated and he often takes up projects that don't have too much melodrama. Even though the actor belongs to the Deol family, he still stands out amongst all his siblings. He ventured into Bollywood with Socha Na Tha, and the sweet coming-of-age movie amassed a lot of appreciation as well. © Instagram/Abhay Deol © Instagram/Abhay Deol Abhay Deol gave several movies in Bollywood post the success of his first project. He also ventured into OTT platforms in recent years. He was recently seen in Disney Channel's very first movie with a South Asian protagonist. The 45-year-old talented star gave his honest view on the film industry and said that he gained recognition over time and does not follow every Bollywood celebrities' typical route. © Instagram/Abhay Deol Speaking to a leading daily, he said that he does not think he is known as an actor. He further added "People recognise me, they tell me they love my work. I don’t feel the lack of recognition at all.” © Instagram/Abhay Deol He also spoke about what differentiates him from the other actors and said that it's the 'lack of investing in PR machinery.' Abhay also said that he was never interested in being in the news and projecting a star image. He also added that since he does not have PR machinery, he lacks the star image. Therefore, not having a PR team is a choice he made. "People want to interview me, I get interviewed. People recognise me, they tell me they love my work. I don't feel the lack of recognition at all. If there is any lack of, it's the lack of investing in a PR machinery to keep me in the news all the time, and project a star image, which I was never interested in. So I do lack that star image, which I myself have to feed. Because all the stars have a PR machinery behind them that feeds into that narrative. I don't have that, and that's by choice." © Instagram/Abhay Deol He also spoke about the difference between actors in the US and India. He said, "It’s sad that in India particularly, more so than in America, you just have to constantly feed the beast and stay in the news.” He still continues to take up projects and scripts that strike a chord with him and does deny roles that do not match his tastes. Hence, he added, 'if that's not success I don't know what is.' Abhay also said that an actor earns recognition only after he is endorsing brands every other day in India. But I cannot sit here and say that I am not recognised… People love my work and they tell me that all the time. It's sad that in India particularly, more so than in America, you just have to constantly feed the beast and stay in the news. We've created a system where, unless I see you every other day endorsing 10 brands, you're not recognised. What happened to just the fact that people love you and say that they do, and that journalists want to speak to you and papers are interested in what you have to say? © Instagram/Abhay Deol In the recent movie Spin, Abhay has essayed the character of a father to a 16-year-old teenage girl, an Indian-American actor, Avantika Vandanapu. 9. Abhay Deol is one of those brilliant actors in the industry who are highly underrated. He didn’t get the success he deserved for a really long time, despite being an amazing actor, beloved by both fans and critics. Then what went wrong? Bollywood. © Instagram/Abhay Deol However, he isn’t an outsider. In fact, he is related to one of the most popular families in Bollywood. He is the nephew of veteran actor Dharmendra and cousin of Sunny and Bobby. Seems like he has all the important ingredients for the directors to line up at his door with scripts. © Instagram/Abhay Deol But nepotism doesn’t work that way. Abhay recently revealed in an interview what the film industry actually values and it’s much more than having ties in Bollywood or even talent. It’s about loyalty. He said he has thrived to do different roles but that’s not how it rolls. © Instagram/Abhay Deol He said, “Look, at the end of the day, we, as a culture, reward loyalty more than we reward innovation. We are just culturally built like that. So, it doesn’t matter if you’re an insider or an outsider, if you show loyalty you can get very far.” This certainly gives the whole nepotism debate a new take, which makes sense. © Instagram/Abhay Deol “It’s not that bad, it’s you as an individual if you choose to stay away from the crowd, then it doesn’t matter if you’re from the inside, you will be excluded from the crowd,” he further added. He also said that Bollywood is big on forming cliques and choosing one of their own from that clique whether or not they are star kids or have a godfather in the industry. “But if you want to be in the crowd, I mean Bollywood is very cliquish, we all know that. So, you can pick a clique and if someone takes a fancy to you and thinks, ‘okay I can do something with this person,’ then it doesn’t matter if you’re from a film family or not, you’ll get taken in,” he said. © Instagram/Abhay Deol This explains why genuinely good actors like Abhay Deol have to struggle for roles and get their due in the industry, despite belonging to the film background. 10. Abhay Deol is one of the most talented actors out there in Bollywood as we speak. It really is the gospel truth! Unfortunately, however, he doesn't often feature in as many movies as we'd like to see him. Why? Well, there are a number of reasons for it actually. First, because as talented as he is, he really likes to be choosy about the projects that he does. That's the reason we don't see him star in a lot of commercial projects. © YouTube Let's admit it! We loved Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Every time it comes on the TV and we try lazying about and watch it because it has such an insane comfort level. This is all thanks to the star cast trio of Abhay Deol, Hrithik Roshan, and Farhan Akhtar. However, as things go in the industry, unfortunately, the credit usually doesn't go exactly as it should. Well, that's what happened at an award show. During a function, in one of the categories for the movie, the show instead of admiring the work of the trio ended up presenting Hrithik and Katrina Kaif as lead actors of the film while relegating Abhay and Farhan in supporting actors categories. Shameful! Well, while Farhan swallowed a humble pie, our hero Abhay didn't take this absolute s***. Taking the Instagram, the actor said, “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, released in 2011. Need to chant this title to myself every day nowadays! Also, a great watch when anxious or stressed. I would like to mention that almost all the award functions demoted me and Farhan from main leads, and nominated us as ‘supporting actors’. Hrithik and Katrina were nominated as “actors in a leading role”. So by the industry’s own logic, this was a film about a man and a woman falling in love, with the man supported by his friends for whatever decisions he takes,” he wrote. This really was very unfair. I doubt the movie would have been the same without Abhay in it. I mean, it was his F****** bachelor's! Anyway, glad to see he took a stand! Never Change Abhay! Never Change! 5. He Fought Almost Everyone In Bollywood By Admitting That Nepotism Existed! View the full article
  11. It’s bizarre to see men in their 50s are romancing women half their age on screen. All the viewers get to see actors like Salman Khan or Ajay Devgn or Shah Rukh Khan playing quite younger roles and it’s a common thing to see that they are cast opposite actresses who are more than 10 to 15 years younger than them. Earlier Dia Mirza had shared her opinion on the widening age gap between actors and actresses. She had said, “The industry is male-dominated. Older men like to be cast alongside young actresses to extend their shelf life. It is extremely bizarre to see 50-year-old actors being cast opposite 19-year-old actresses.” Now, Abhay Deol has raised his voice against this and he has always voiced his opinions on Bollywood’s biases and wrong-doings. Well, Abhay is playing a father to a teenage girl in his next venture, Disney's Spin. View this post on Instagram Here are the three arguments that he shared in a conversation with Bollywood Life: 1. When asked if he has any qualms about playing a father on screen, he said that he is secure as an actor. He said, “If I had to have qualms about anything then I would have had them 10-12 years ago doing what I was doing in Bollywood. I have never really held back, I am quite secure in who I am and where I come from. The Netflix show that I am doing spans 20 years, I go from 39 to 59. I can play my age, I can play 10-12 years younger still, so I am just having fun.” View this post on Instagram 2. He said it’s okay to play your age and do roles that are within your age bracket. He said, “As long as people are convinced that I am doing that role whether at 35 or 45, I would like to do both. You just got to take care of yourself so that you can pass for the ages that you play. I would like to stick to that window.” There are actors who are touching their 50s but are still seen playing the characters in their 20s. 3. He also said that Bollywood is still casting older men opposite way younger actresses. “Bollywood still will cast actors who are in their 50s opposite girls who are in their 20s and not even make it about an older man and younger girl, they will make them look like as a couple. In that environment, what does it matter?,” said Abhay. View this post on Instagram What do you have to say about his thoughts on these biases in Bollywood? Let us know in the comments section below. 12. The Family Man 2 makers have introduced new characters in the second season of the show who have managed to steal hearts with their power-packed performances. If you have seen the show, you might have particularly liked Abhay Verma who played the role of Kalyan, aka Salman, who kidnapped Srikant’s (Manoj Bajpayee) daughter. © Prime Video His character was constantly torn apart between the love that he feels and the mission that he has been handed responsibilities for. From his boyish charms to his expressions, Abhay has clearly bowled everyone over with his acting. In his latest Instagram post, Abhay expressed gratitude for the fact that the makers of the show gave him a significant amount of screen space to showcase his talent. In his message, he said, “Thank you Raj and DK sir, and my director Suparn for allowing me with this opportunity to be a part of this wonderful family of The Family Man. I also want to thank every member of this show who made it look like what it looks like. The love, respect, and affection you have shown towards Salman/Kalyan is amazing. My shoulders feel heavy but I take this responsibility with my head up. I shall try my level best to entertain you guys in whatever way I can.” View this post on Instagram When we went through his Instagram profile, his pictures somehow reminded us of Aditya Roy Kapur in his early days. 13. Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and Abhay Deol’s movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is surely one of those cult films that has left an indelible impression in our minds. The iconic bromance between Kabir, Imraan and Arjun gave us major friendship goals. If you have seen the movie, you must remember the iconic ‘the mantal buoy’ scene. The Instagram handle of Zoya Akhtar’s production banner, Tiger Baby Films, shared a video revealing what went behind the making of this particular scene and in fact, Hrithik almost killed Farhan and Abhay. Before we get into details that Abhay Deol had revealed about the scene, here’s a look at it: The “mantal buoy” scene comes in the movie when the trio is en route to Costa Brava, and Hrithik’s character Arjun gets a work call. Talking about the scene, Abhay said, “I remember this scene in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara really well. So, there was Zoya and Farhan's teacher in Maneckji, who couldn't say 'boy', he would say 'buoy' and 'mantal' and they would make fun of him. Zoya was like that's where it comes from, this is sort of like taking the piss out of our teacher. I was like, 'why are you giving it to me?! I'm not the Maneckji kid'." Deol further narrated, "So I think the irony of this scene was that I didn't actually hear the man say it the way he did. This scene just kind of became iconic of the movie, 'the buoys, the mantal buoys', much bigger than I imagined it would go, this particular part. I was so happy that people responded to it cause I was like, 'I'm gonna ruin their teacher and this is all wrong', oh well, Zoya seems happy, she was laughing." About Hritik almost killing the two, he said, “I also remember before shooting this scene, Hrithik almost killed me and Farhan. How he did that was, he was behind the driver's seat and he drove the car into this corner to park it, on the side, for the background of the shot and forgot to switch the car off! Just opens the door and walks out of it and then suddenly jumps back in cause the car started going forward to go down the hill." He concluded by saying, "Farhan was really fast, I remember he jumped out immediately and I just sat there thinking, 'I'm gonna die now'. Ah, I need to be a lot faster about such things." 14. Abhay Deol can’t stop praising actors Taapsee Pannu, Swara Bhasker and jewellery designer Farah Khan Ali. Wondering why? It’s because these women were among the few Indian celebrities to voice their support for farmers' protest and against the near-identical “India against propaganda” tweets by other actors and cricketers including Akshay Kumar, Karan Johar and others. Sharing screenshots of tweets made by the three, Abhay wrote in an Instagram post, "The popular expression, 'having the b@!!$' means to say 'having the courage.' Looking at these lovely ladies’ media feed and I think we should replace 'b@!!$' with 'V@£!/@' @taapsee, @farahkhanali @reallyswara ya’ll should be in the next @badgalriri video! Right wing trolls in 3, 2, 1." View this post on Instagram In her tweet on Thursday, Taapsee had made an indirect comment about the social media outcry that Rihanna's comment on the farmers' protests evoked. "If one tweet rattles your unity, one joke rattles your faith or one show rattles your religious belief then it’s you who has to work on strengthening your value system not become ‘propaganda teacher’ for others," she'd written. Farah expressed her disappointment and reminded everyone of the distinction between ‘reel-life heroes’ and ‘real-life heroes’. “Disappointed with the fraternity tweeting identical tweets that make it more like a marketing gimmick. Whatever their reasons & I’m no one to judge at least u could have tried to make it more original. Now you have given yourselves away. Reel Life Heroes VS Real Life Heroes,” she wrote. Actress Swara Bhasker has also been tweeting on the topic. घटिया लोग! ओछे लोग! दिमाग़ में गटर!!! #Shame pic.twitter.com/DmJfoQka5A — Swara Bhasker (@ReallySwara) February 4, 2021 The BackstoryOn Wednesday, a host of Bollywood celebrities, including Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor and Suniel Shetty, posted similar statements about the ongoing farmers’ protest with the hashtag #IndiaAgainstPropaganda. Their tweets came after the External Affairs Ministry’s statement on certain ‘vested interest groups’ succeeding in getting ‘international support against India’, after pop star Rihanna, teenage activist Greta Thunberg and others commented on the protests. 16. If you see around, thereâs this angst around in people wherein they are pointing out whatâs happening in the film industry. Not long ago, Abhay Deol sparked controversy when he opened about how he felt neglected post Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and pointed to the fact how he was sidelined by Bollywood lobby culture and Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif were promoted as the main lead. Abhay said he had issues with the tag of the âsupporting actorâ for him and Farhan Akhtar. In an interaction with India Today, Farhan Akhtar said he was okay with the nominations of the awards and he didnât join the film industry to be featured on magazine covers or treated like a star. âYou are constantly hearing about some rat race and everybody is fighting each other to some kind of spot which does not exist. I mean the fact is you have to believe in yourself, you have to work sincerely, work hard, how many magazines covers you will do, whether you came on the front page of a magazine, or the front page of a newspaper,â he said. He added, âIf that is your larger interest, I really feel that you are in the wrong profession. Youâre not here for that. Have you come here to be an actor, director, singer, music composer, or have you come here to be a reality star? Have you come here to be just, I donât know, a star?â © Excel Movies For the unversed, in his Instagram post a few days ago, Abhay wrote, âI would like to mention that almost all the award functions demoted me and Farhan from main leads and nominated us as "supporting actors". Hrithik and Katrina were nominated as "actors in a leading role". So by the industry's own logic, this was a film about a man and a woman falling in love, with the man supported by his friends for whatever decisions he takes.â Thereâs a lot that has been said about the Bollywood lobby culture. While Abhay chose to call out, Farhan has taken a rather different approach to see things and focusing on his art. View the full article
  17. He is unfiltered, unapologetic, never shies away from putting forth his opinions and steers clear of the privilege that the 'Deol' tag offers him, particularly in his career. We are talking about none other than Abhay Deol here, the man who took his sweet time to carve a niche for himself in the industry, solely on his acting prowess. While most actors were busy ensuring their box office scores kept soaring, we had Abhay on the other side, churning out meaningful stories with his power-packed performances. He is surely among the rare breed of sorted actors we have in the industry right now. Be it 'Dev D' or 'Aisha' or 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', Abhay has never failed to impress us with his brilliance in his craft. If you have been missing watching him on the big screen, we have some good news for you. Abhay is coming back with his Netflix series 'Chopsticks' and a film titled 'Jungle Cry'. If you go by the trailers, you would have gotten an idea by now that something great is in store for you. Before you see him on the big screen and on your laptop screens, MensXP got you the unfiltered version of Abhay Deol, as we got a chance to interact with him and talk about some rather controversial issues. When we asked him if he has come to terms with the idea of his persona in the industry, which is known for being someone with rather strong opinions, Abhay said, "not sure what there is to come to terms with. Isn't that a good thing? As long as you don't force your opinions on others and are open to new ideas, there's no problem." If you have seen any of Abhay's films, you would know that he is known more for his choices of offbeat cinema. As a movie buff, I wanted to know what does he see in a script before giving a final nod to it. "Relatability, originality, context. I'm attracted to stories and characters that I can relate to, I look for originality even if it is a genre that has been done many times, and context, by which I mean where is it placed, how does it relate to that place, what is it saying about that place and why." Abhay started way too early when we talk about content-based cinema. Now, Bollywood is completely changing and content has now become the king. We have unconventional heroes like Rajkummar Rao, Vicky Kaushal and Ayushmann Khurrana taking the lead. The actor is proud of the change in the industry and said, "I think it's great! Technology has played a disruptive role all across the world and I was waiting for it to happen in our industry. When I was making non-conformist films, they got a release because coincidently the multiplex boom was happening. That came to an end, as there could only be a finite number of cinema halls we could have. With the digital era, that space is now limitless! The change in audience tastes has also happened because the generation that is going to the cinemas now was too young to be consumers when I was pushing hard for change. They've grown up exposed to world cinema/shows from a very young age and that explains their rejection of the old guard of Bollywood lately, and their embrace of more relatable actors, characters, and stories." View this post on Instagram Basking in the light of the #wintersun. A post shared by Abhay Deol (@abhaydeol) on Dec 4, 2018 at 1:47am PST Abhay shocked everyone when he took on the who's who of Bollywood and slammed them for promoting racism through their fairness cream endorsements. Talking about endorsements, it has become a clear shot formula for actors to be in the scene, even if they don't really stand by the product. I asked Abhay if he thinks that the concept of celebs endorsing such products blindly, should completely disappear from the scene. "Yes, I think celebs should not endorse brands that go against their principles. For example, if celebs who endorse fairness creams actually believe that fairer is better than darker, then that's fine. The thing is if they actually believed that, then they should find themselves to be inferior to fairer people as they themselves are dark in real life. And no matter how fair you are, as an Indian, you will always be dark in the context of the world. Then there are brands that pollute not just the body but also the environment, like all colas. On one level, all products are destructive to a degree, some more than others and I tend to side with the ones that cause the least damage because, after all, endorsements have become integral to an actor's career. Even the media plays its part, as endorsements are (often) their only source of revenue. We need to call out all players, not just the celebs to be 'fair'." Abhay said loud and clear. Abhay has always been very transparent in his approach to everything that he strongly believes in. Has it ever happened that he was rejected because of his transparency? Turns out, "many times." Well, that's how it works for people who are very blunt and transparent. So, what's next for him, "My next release is 'Chopsticks' which is the first Netflix Original film out of India. It goes live on its platform on the 31st of May," said Abhay. Are you excited for this one? His journey has been turbulent and he has had his own set of struggles. But what's more important is that he actually learnt from the things that held him from growing even more. "Everyone goes through struggles, successes, and failures. It's part of life and I'm glad I've got to experience both, the highs and the lows. You cannot appreciate the highs unless you have gone through the lows. As I said, everyone goes through highs and lows but not everyone learns to appreciate both, as many people do not like the lows. This is why there's a whole industry selling you a pill for your 'depression' or 'sadness'. I am aware that I've to lead a privileged existence and I am grateful for it. I've done exactly what I've wanted to, lived my life authentically and there are not many people who can say that." Come to think of it, that's how he always shoots with me! A post shared by Abhay Deol (@abhaydeol) on Jun 15, 2018 at 7:08am PDT The Deol tag eventually got me asking him about Nepotism that became a huge deal a while back. For the uninitiated, Nepotism is 'the practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs'. I asked him if he relates to the word and does he think having relatives in the industry helps the person grow, or does one have to constantly prove their caliber? To which Abhay had a rather strong response, "It's both a privilege and a curse. If you look at the current crop of actors, 99% of them are from a film family, the 1% left over are proteges of those with influence. It's unfair to point to Bollywood alone and call out its nepotism. Don't you see it in politics and big business as well? Most people would not like to hear this, but nepotism is part of Indian culture. Where do you think cast, 'Jati' comes from? The son is born into a community and carries forward the work of his father while the women get married and become housewives. Most of the country still operates under this Brahmanical system, the very thing both Gautam Buddha and Mahavira rebelled against. So, if you want to criticize Bollywood for its nepotism, look at your own family and ask the question, 'am I willing to marry outside my cast?' or 'am I running my father's business?' or 'will I let my maid or driver sit at the dinner table with me and eat with me?' Because all of these questions, believe it or not, are linked to our unique brand of Nepotism." 18. "I will kill them with success and bury them with a smile" - That's how Mithila Palkar's character has been introduced in Netflix's upcoming original film 'Chopsticks'. The trailer has been dropped online and the content is quite fresh and yes, also engaging. So, the story is about a talented but insecure woman who takes help from an enigmatic con to get her stolen car back. The film also stars Abhay Deol, who is known for his unconventional choices. Not just Abhay, the film also has the powerhouse of talent, Vijay Raaz, on board. Mithila and Abhay teaming up for a film is surely a visual delight for a movie fanatic. Both are such actors who believe in putting out their best on the big screen. 'Chopsticks' has been shot in Mumbai and all the locations from Colaba to Virar have been covered. In an interview with Grazia, Mithila and Abhay spoke about their experiences shooting for the film in Mumbai. Abhay said the shooting process was effortless and everything went pretty smooth. He added that working with Mithila was fun as she is full of energy. Adding to it, Mithila said that they have tried capturing the essence of the city. If you have seen the trailer, you would agree with us on the fact that the fresh pairing of Mithila and Abhay does add to the chunkiness of the film. Here's the trailer: Did you like it? 19. Abhay Deol has been MIA for a while. However, that is what sets him apart from everyone else in Bollywood, we think. There's this inexplicably charming nonchalance about everything he does - right from not making an effort to get along with the maddening B'town crowd, to not being hesitant in the least while speaking up about important issues like the obsession with fair skin. © © Instagram/Abhaydeol He is never in the limelight but sneakily went through an amazing transformation that should most certainly bring him under it. © Instagram/Abhaydeol © Instagram/Abhaydeol He has been hitting the gym a lot, and it clearly is working wonders. Well, looks like Abhay has finally heard his fans and is back on-screen with a horror comedy that definitely seems like an interesting watch. And here's the Motion Poster of #NanuKiJaanu... Unlike what you have seen before, Abhay's new flick is the story of a ghost falling in love with a crook. The trailer clearly gives us a glimpse of an after-life love story between the beautiful Patralekhaa and Deol. Started work on a new film! A dark comedy, my favourite genre. #Nanukijaanu pic.twitter.com/blK9YBndy7 — abhay deol (@AbhayDeol) September 20, 2017 While many might think horror is Bollywood's new genre, let us tell you this one looks like a promising slapstick comedy with some witty one-liners. The film will also bring the amazing Jodi of 'Lucky' and 'Bangali' (Abhay Deol and Manu Rishi Chadha) from Dibakar Banerjee's 2008 film, 'Oye Lucky Lucky Oye' and looking at how these movies fared you just know, this is going to be a great watch indeed. (c) T-Series Directed by Faraz Haider, the film is all set to hit the screens on 20 April. Written by Manu Rishi Chadha, it looks like a light-hearted quirky film that might entertain the viewers thoroughly. Also, Bigg Boss contestant Sapna Chaudhary will be seen in the film playing a vital role. (c) Twitter What also makes us hopeful is the fact, that Abhay is very picky about the content and often signs films that had always made us love his performance and the story. Watch the trailer below: With films like 'Dev D', 'Ranjhanna', 'Oye Lucky Lucky Oye', 'Happy Bhag Jayegi', Abhay has always moved us with his unconventional roles. He will soon be seen in Anand L Rai's 'Zero' and also will be seen working on 'Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi', a sequel to the hit 2016 film 'Happy Bhag Jayegi'. The actor will also be making his Tamil debut with 'Idhu Vedalam Sollum Kathai' and we are pretty thrilled to watch him rocking the silver screen again.
  21. Care to disagree: there's always a right way to do something. Even to dressing up. Sure, there's a Ranveer Singh that shuns everything right but at least he makes it look absolutely sane. But unfortunately, most of us don't possess the right skills to dress right. Or, skills to make the wrong look right and make the insane look sane. That's when sartorial mavens like Abhay Deol come into the picture. Agreed, he's got the looks and Preeti Desai, but he also has a bomber jacket you've got to steal. © Viral Bhayani In case this isn't self-explanatory for you, let's explain. While layering in summer (which in itself is a crime), most of us get three crucial things wrong: colour, style and how to pair. However, Mr. Deol's got it all figured out. The colour's fresh, there's leather in there (to add polish to his casual look) and it's been layered on a T-shirt that's balancing his footwear. Even the T-shirt's longer than usual (a longline T-shirt) and the length of his bomber jacket is absolutely on point. Big ace! © Viral Bhayani Now you'd say, "His colours are so boring. There's not a single pop hue in there." Listen up: maybe you should focus on getting the fit of your damn trousers right, before commenting on the privileged lad's personal style, which happens to be one of the best ones we've seen lately.
