Warner’s Wife Candice Slays Critics With Sarcasm As Opener Bags Top Award & Fans Love It

Form is temporary, class is permanent. Australian opener David Warner proved the same in the just-concluded T20 World Cup.

Not only did he play a key role in Australia’s maiden T20 World cup triumph, but also silenced his critics who wrote him off by bagging the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award for scoring most runs in this year’s multi-nation event.

The 35-year-old opener came into the tournament on the back of arguably his worst IPL season. He was stripped off his captaincy duties in the first-half of the IPL 2021, dropped on the bench after just two poor outings in the second half and wasn’t even allowed to travel with the team to the stadium.

For the most successful overseas batter in IPL history, this treatment wasn’t something that he deserved, especially after all that he achieved on the field with the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), which included winning their one and only IPL title.

The last few months were tough for Warner and his family and that’s why when he finished the T20 World Cup on a high, his wife Candice Warner took a sly dig at all his critics, who believed he wouldn’t be able to turn things around and his days were over.

Sharing a picture of Warner’s stats in the tournament, his wife Candice questioned the critics who had questioned his abilities because of his age and recent form.

“Out of form, too old and slow! congratulations @davidwarner31,” Candice wrote on the micro-blogging site.

If one tweet wasn’t enough, she even quoted a Cricket Australia post that mentioned Warner’s match-defining knock (53 runs, 38 balls, four fours and three sixes) in the summit clash and once again slammed the critics for writing him off. “Out of form!!” read her tweet.

While the whole world was sceptical about Warner’s form and raised questions about his place in the side based on his recent form, the Australian skipper Aaron Finch was confident about his opening partner’s ability right from the onset and even told their coach Justin Langer not to worry about the southpaw.

Finch was so confident in Warner’s abilities that he even told Langer that he would be the Man of the Tournament.

“I can't believe people wrote him off a couple of weeks ago saying he was done. It was like poking the bear,”  Finch said at the post-match press conference.

“I called Justin Langer a few months ago and said: 'Don't worry about Davey, he'll be Man of the Tournament'. He's one of the all-time great batters. And he's a fighter. He's someone who when his back is against the wall, that's when you get the very, very best of David Warner. It was a special finish to the tournament for him, the last couple of knocks,” Finch added, heaping praise on his opening partner.

David Warner's last three innings:

89* vs West Indies, Super 12s
49 vs Pakistan, semi-final
50* vs New Zealand, today

Warner didn’t have the greatest of starts but he gained confidence as the tournament progressed and started scoring runs on a consistent basis. A majority of his runs came in the last three innings.

He scored an unbeaten 89 against the West Indies in their last group match which booked their spot in the knockout stage. He followed it up with a brilliant 49 against Pakistan in the semi-final and scored a brilliant fifty in the final against trans-tasman rivals New Zealand.

Warner knew that the only way to shut down critics is by performing on the field and he kept mum all this while and let his bat do the talking.
