SBI Employees Shame & Send Back Customer Because He Was Wearing Shorts

State Bank of India is the largest public sector bank in India. However, its employees have always been accused and trolled for being sloppy and taking extended lunch breaks and neglecting customers by telling them to come later because the server is down or it’s lunch time).

However, a customer experienced something he wasn’t expecting when he went to an SBI branch in a suburban area near Calcutta in Bengal to close his dormant account. A Reddit user Ashish shared his plight on a thread where he said that he was outright shamed and ridiculed for wearing shorts (not boxers, running shorts, he clarified).

He wrote, “As soon as I entered one of the peons at the branch asked me to come back wearing "Full Pants" as wearing shorts is against customer decorum. I asked him, where it is written, he said "we expect customers to follow basic decency"

He adds, “I asked him to share with me any official rule or circular and I will go back, this time in a bit louder voice. Another clerk interjected, " You go to office wearing shorts too?"

I said, "this is your office, not mine, show me a dress code for customers and I will go and change". "Aisi cheezon ka circular nahi hota" ("There are no circulars for stuff like this") he replied.”

“After a moments silence, a female clerk shouted "Yaha do female staff hai, aapko sharam nahi aati half pant pehen ke aa gaye aap" (You should be ashamed that you're wearing shorts to the branch when there are female employees ) I retorted, "aapko sharam nahi aati, bank mein aaye customer ke kapdo par nazar rakhte hue? Apna kaam karo na aap” ( "You should be ashamed that you checkout a customers' clothing and comment on it, instead of doing your own work"), he wrote in the post.

He also tweeted about it, asking the bank if there’s any such rule for the customers.

Hey @TheOfficialSBI went to one of your branch today wearing shorts, was told that I need to come back wearing full pants as the branch expects customers to "maintain decency"

Is there some sort of an official policy on what a customer can wear and cannot wear?

He said he retorted back from further argument and returned back home after asking the process to close the account. This was highly unacceptable and the strangest thing is many people responded saying it has happened to them as well, at various places like hospitals and a doctor’s clinic, if not bank.

However, other users said that they always go to the bank in casuals and moral policing is uncalled for. This was not expected from the employees of the largest bank in India. I mean we expect them to say “lunch ke baad aana” but not “full pants pehen ke aana”.
