Kohli Says He Once Had Second Thoughts About RCB After Teams Tried To Lure Him For Auction

Virat Kohli is the only player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) who has never switched franchises since the tournament’s inception.

After guiding India to the 2008 Under-19 World Cup, the Delhi-born cricketer had become a household name. His overnight stardom had made him one of the most sought after teenage talents ahead of the inaugural edition of the IPL.

Since he belonged to Delhi, the opportunity to sign him was first given to Delhi Daredevils but owing to the team combination they opted for fast bowler Pradeep Sangwan. It was a golden opportunity and the Bengaluru-based outfit leapfrogged other franchises and brought him on board for a paltry sum of Rs 13 lakh.

Since then the IPL has completed 14 years and the 15th season is just over a month away. When Kohli had joined RCB he was just another teenager but now he has become the face of Indian cricket. The 33-year-old batter has come a long way and his long association with the franchise has made him synonymous with the red and black army.

RCB have done well to keep hold of their marquee player for all these years but we often forget the role Kohli played in making it happen. He could’ve easily earned more by entering the auction but he decided against it.

To the franchise’s credit, the RCB owners also made sure that their biggest asset was paid handsomely. They made sure that he was the highest paid cricketer in the whole league – a tag that he held until last year. But money is not the only reason why a cricketer plays the sport.

There is no IPL fan in the whole world who didn’t wish for Kohli to ditch RCB and join their favourite franchise. Not just the fans, there was a stage when even Kohli had second thoughts about whether he should continue with the RCB or look for other challenges.

Kohli made this revelation himself on the RCB podcast. The former India skipper revealed that several franchises had approached him to reject RCB’s new contract and put his name up for auction.

Having spent considerable years in the same outfit, Kohli couldn’t win any silverware and perhaps that’s why he started having second thoughts about his future at the club. But to the delight of RCB’s incredible fanbase, he decided to stay.

“I’ve been approached a few times as well — to come into the auction somehow — I have thought about it,” Kohli said in the RCB podcast as quoted by India.com.

“At the end of the day, a person lives a certain number of years, and then you die and life moves on. There have been many great players who have won trophies and things like that but no one addresses you like that. If you are a good person, people like you and if you are a bad guy, they stay away from you. Eventually, that’s what life is all about,” Kohli explained.

We all go through moments in our life when we start having second thoughts about something. But, in the end, all that matters is the final decision.

Kohli has now publicly stated that he wishes to continue at RCB till the end of his playing days. Whether he wins the IPL trophy or not, it will be difficult for anyone else to match his legacy.
