Smart shoes are going to be the next big thing in smart wearables and Nike unveiled the Adapt BB, a shoe that can lace itself and can be controlled via an app. It's called the Adapt BB and can be used to track activity and even customisation. It connects with the Nike Adapt app on smartphones which can be used to control the shoe for different types of fitting.
The app enables the wearer to customise the fit of the shoe by tightening and loosening it up giving it a true custom fit for a user. The smart shoe is an extension of Nike's HyperAdapt 1.0 show which was the company's first multipurpose performance shoe.
Nike details in its press note on how the smart features can be used: “We picked basketball as the first sport for Nike Adapt intentionally because of the demands that athletes put on their shoes. During a normal basketball game the athlete's foot changes and the ability to quickly change your fit by loosening your shoe to increase blood flow and then tighten again for performance is a key element that we believe will improve the athlete's experience,” says Eric Avar, Nike VP Creative Director of Innovation. How Does It Work?
When one slips in their foot, the Nike Adapt BB's custom motor and great senses the amount of tension that's needed by the foot. It then tightens itself and adjust the fit according to the foot of the user. Even though these kicks don't use traditional laces, it sort of laces itself for the user. Nike says “the tensile strength of the underfoot lacing is able to pull 32 pounds of force (roughly equal to that of a standard parachute cord) to secure the foot throughout a range of movement.”
Users can then adjust the shoe according to their own preference depending on what activity they will be performing. For example, a player can loosen up the show either manually or from the app while relaxing during a break. Before re-entering the court, a user can tighten up the fit according to his/her preference. The technology on the shoe can also be updated via firmware upgrades on the app and in theory upgrade its capabilities.
The Nike Adapt BB will cost $350 (Rs 25,000 approx), which is quite reasonable as previous iterations cost upwards of $700. The smart shoe is expected to launch next month and its India pricing and availability details are yet to be announced.
