Mohammed Shami's 'Bahut Achha English' Impresses Simon Doull & Virat Kohli At The Presentation

Taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, the Indian cricket team was eager to seal the deal as they took the field against New Zealand at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui in the 3rd One-Day International (ODI) on 28th January. Expected to make a strong comeback in a bid to stay alive in the series, the Kiwis, once again, stuttered as the Virat Kohli-led India romped their way to another clinical win.

After deciding to bat first, the hosts lost their top three early on before Ross Taylor and Tom Latham stepped up to the task with a pivotal 119-run partnership for the fourth wicket. But, the Kiwis couldn't capitalise on that partnership as they continued to lose wickets before being bundled out for a mediocre 243-run total.

In reply, Rohit Sharma (62) and Kohli (60) added 113 runs for the second wicket after the early dismissal of Shikhar Dhawan (28). While both Rohit and Kohli missed out on an opportunity to bag a hundred, a 77-run partnership between Dinesh Karthik (38*) and Ambati Rayudu (40*) got the visitors over the line with seven wickets and 42 balls to spare.

A great bowling performance, backed by responsible batting, paved another win for the Indian side. While the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya and Yuzvendra Chahal all claimed a brace, it was undoubtedly Mohammed Shami whose influential figures of 3-41 were crucial in India's win.

For someone who was adjudged the 'Man of the Match' in the first ODI, it wasn't surprising to see Shami claiming the honours in the third game as well. And after his majestic bowling earned him plaudits, Shami's communication skills in English won over Simon Doull at the presentation.

Unlike the first match in Napier, where he had Kohli for company who translated the questions for his teammate, Shami decided to go solo this time around and gave his best shot at answering Simon Doull's queries at the presentation ceremony. "It's really difficult to bowl against the wind. One comes with the wind and the other is against the wind. It is difficult but not too hard. Bhuvi at the other end was also a great help. Sticking to areas where we want to bowl is the key," Shami said.

Doull, the former New Zealand fast bowler who was conducting the presentation ceremony, was so impressed with Shami's effort that he complimented him in Hindi after the interview. "Your English bahut acha, congratulations," Doull told Shami as Kohli burst out laughing.
