How Nantes Said Their Final Goodbye To Emiliano Sala After His Unfortunate Death

A couple of days ago, in what can be considered as one of the most heartbreaking stories of 2019, Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala's body was recovered from a plane wreckage after over a month since his flight went off radar somewhere over the English channel.

While the striker was suspected to be dead already for a couple of months, a private rescue party was still out there looking for him relentlessly until they finally spotted the debris from the crashed plane.

In the first home game ever since Sala's body was given back to his parents for a proper funeral, his previous team, Nantes FC, a French Ligue 1 team, decided to carry out one final goodbye in the biggest and the most impactful way they could.

The 28-year-old's former teammates came out of the locker room wearing all black with a sticker that read 'Sala' on their backs as the crowd chanted “La la la la…, Em-il-ia-no” before a loud roar of applause rose from the benches. Members from both the teams formed a circle along with their coaching staff to mourn together at the loss of a fine footballer.

Just before the match began, a large screen showed all 48 goals he scored in 133 appearances during his four-year career with the French club. Nantes also retired Sala's jersey number 9, which is the first jersey ever to be retired in the 76-year-old history of the club.

The visiting team, Nîmes Olympique too showed their respect for the dead footballer by wearing a black armband around their biceps.

Nantes' head coach Vahid Halilhodzic was unable to hold back his tears after the news of Sala's death was made public on Friday. “He is someone who will leave an eternal memory in this club through his behaviour and his modesty,” said a very emotional Halilhodzic in a press conference.
