Every time the Indian borders or the safety of its citizens are threatened, it is the men in green who stand in the way of trouble. Holding the fort with all their might and even putting their lives on the line to get it done. Yet there's no denying that their bravado and selflessness also makes them easy targets and puts them in harm's way, every time our foes wish to make a point (however unnecessary and futile).

Yesterday's terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Pulwama, which is being called the biggest attack in the area since the Uri attack in 2016, is a proof of such a situation. Yesterday JeM terrorists targeted a CRPF procession in Jammu to Srinagar which comprised of over 70 vehicles and 2,547 personnel. The attack took away the life of 44 jawans and has left the country seething with anger and grief.

Targeting unsuspecting soldiers and attacking them when their defences are down is the biggest proof of cowardice that there is. Yet, even in death the jawans and their families continue to prove that they are the country's biggest pride. Even through their ultimate misery and loss, the families of the martyred jawans continue to take pride in the sacrifice their sons, husbands and brothers made for their motherland.

However, it the need of the hour is to stand with the families of the martyred and share in the pain in grief. And since acknowledgement is the simplest way to start, let's begin with that.

Then there are fathers and families like Martyred CRPF jawan Ratan Thakur's father who is willing to send his other son for the service of the nation, after losing his son on nation's duty.

We salute our brave jawans and their even braver families. We are with them in this time of loss.
