There is power in making people laugh. It lies in giving people a few moments of undiluted bliss, which is enough to make them lose sight of the anxiety that cripples their sense of the future, and lifts the weight of stress and expectations they battle on a daily basis.
The power inherent in making thousands of people double over and laugh out loud without a care in the world using only a few words, should make anybody feel like a king who has made the greatest conquest that there is.
24-year-old internet celebrity Bhuvan Bam happens to be one such laughter king, who does more than making people laugh. Yes, he tickles our funny bones, but he also takes our brains for a spin and makes us think through his sketches and jokes.
It is common news that Bhuvan's 'BB Ki Vines' is became an absolute show stealer one day suddenly and there was no looking back. It rightly put him on the map as one of India's best YouTubers in recent times, and soon he turned into one of GenY's most beloved entertainers whose sketches and performances have been cracking them up for the longest time.
However, long before it all started, Bhuvan was more invested in singing and making it as a singer performing for thousands of screaming fans and creating music topped his chart until 'BB Ki Vines' happened out of nowhere, and changed his life forever.
He had had a very average middle-class childhood, with average academic achievements, but that didn't stop him from getting a bachelor's degree in History from University of Delhi. But 'BB Ki Vines' looked beyond his academic performances, and once it took off like it did, there was no looking back.
Yet, his parents still urge him to shift gears into a more conventional career, a very middle-class approach to “kid's future”, and suggest that he sit for banking exams and the likes. But what they didn't understand initially was that the kind of fame and money their son was about to get through his Vines on YouTube.
That happened when Bhuvan's 'Valentine's Week Hutiyapa' went viral on social media in 2016 and shook Bhuvan's life. However, much before India began appreciating Bhuvan's Vines, he had already made it in Pakistan when one of his videos that hit 1 million was shared extensively in Karachi, making up a ratio of 9:1 to India.
Over time, he began monetising his YouTube videos, and the first cheque changed how his parents saw his 'hobby'. Yet, Bhuvan believes that though 'BB Ki Vines' has become a brand now, Bhuvan Bam still has to go a long way to become a brand as big and as successful as 'BB Ki vines'.
His only strategy all this while has been to make good content that attracts people and thereby brands too. He believes that, “If people love actually love you, they will stay”. For all other things, he appreciates his struggles. He looks forward to the writer's block every now and then because it allows him to gain clarity and approach his content with more sincerity.
His content ranges across the board but many of them come with a message and those are his favourite. But one interaction with a fan, who had been hospitalised and refused to eat or talk for days, finally made him come face to face with the kind of impact he was having on people. The female fan not only spoke to him after days of staying quiet, but also began getting better after meeting her fave celeb Bhuvan.
This changed Bhuvan's outlook altogether and he decided to spread the positivity forward, and reach people by bringing happiness into his audiences' lives. And all he has to say to aspiring content creators in the country, “go with it. Please karo, hoga. Don't think so many others are doing it, what difference will I make. Even if you fail, keep at it. Do it once, twice or thrice. If that doesn't work, do something else. But do it. If you don't go ahead with it, you'll regret it later. “Kaash” nahi karna kabhi life mein.”
