IND Vs PAK: 23 Runs Short Of His Century, Virat Kohli Declared Himself Out When He Was Not

India versus Pakistan is one of the most talked about things about the ICC World Cup 2019. Based on the age-old rivalry between the two cricketing titans, people were hoping for a great match at Old Trafford, Manchester today and boy did the Indian batting order stay true to those expectations.

Opening the Indian batting innings, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul did exceedingly well in scoring more than 100 runs and gave the Men in Blue a great start. Once Sharma was dismissed off a catch at the hands of Hasan Ali after scoring his fastest ODI ton (85 balls), it was time for the Indian skipper Virat Kohli to take over.

Often regarded as one of the finest batsmen of the modern era, Kohli took over alright. During his innings against Sarfaraz Ahmed's men, the Delhi born was also able to score his 11,000th run, which made him the fastest cricketer in the world to reach that number (222 innings) in 54 fewer innings than Sachin Tendulkar, who previously held that record.

However, the end to his record-breaking innings was probably one of the most bizarre ones. Short of 23 runs of scoring a century, the Indian captain declared himself out off a bouncer by Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir as he believed that the ball edged his bat and went into the hands of the wicket-keeper.

The gesture of simply walking away, without even waiting for the umpire to give out the final decision does seem like good sportsman spirit. The only thing that was wrong in the whole episode was the fact that KOHLI WAS NOT OUT.

That's right. Kohli walked away when he was not out and you can't blame the umpire, Bruce Oxenford, as he did not give declare him out. Later during the match, Kohli was seen in the dressing room with the bat in his hand. Judging by the looks of it, Kohli and MS Dhoni were testing the rigidity of the bat. Shaking and thumping the bat against a couch, the two cricketers might have found a small crack between the handle and the body of the bat which could have made a sound which might have led Kohli to believe that the ball touched the bat.

Of course, this is a conjecture and no official statement has come from the cricketer or the team.

Nonetheless, Kohli's fans were heartbroken:

Wasn't even a wicket. Kohli just walked off.. He wasn't out.

All credit to Virat Kohli for walking when he thought he was out. That is so rare today. He and India were incredibly unlucky... nevertheless a formidable total. Stunning atmosphere #INDvsPAK #CWC19
