Foldable smartphones are not a thing of the future anymore as we see multiple companies now releasing their devices. As of now Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola have all showed off their foldable smartphones with unique designs.
However, with any folding screen smartphone, the first concern is its durability and how many times it can withstand the folding and unfolding action. Samsungâs first attempt at the Galaxy Fold was the perfect example of how things can go wrong and in the case of the Motorola Razr, we got to know what the problem could be.
In an initial teardown of the smartphone, the foldable screen is not particularly as fragile as Samsungâs first version of the Galaxy Fold but the hinge is facing issues.

For the Motorola Razr, CNET kept a lower goal i.e. 100,000 folds and in the test, the result was quite shocking. In the test, CNET reveals that after 27,000 folds, the Motorola Razr was not able to close all the way. Thatâs less than half of what Samsungâs claim for the Galaxy Fold.
While CNETâs test may not reflect real-world use of the new Razr, however, it seems like the durability of the hinge is seriously a big worry. If CNETâs test can be translated to a real-world test, the Motorola Razr will not break in a year however will not last as long as traditional smartphones.
The Motorola Razr retails in the U.S. for $1,500 which might be a huge risk if the long-term durability of the smartphone is not certain.
