7 Celebs Who May Suffer For Promoting Fairness, As Govt Wants Misleading Ads Punished & Fined

The civilisation that we are presently a part of, is obsessed with a very particular idea of beauty. It has dictated over our lives from close proximity for so long, that it has almost become second nature to us.

Most of us wish for a certain skin tone, certain face cut or type of hair that weâd physically do anything within our power to attain and adhere to that society-approved notion of âideal beautyâ. This includes buying into advertisements that promise to turn our skin colour a few shades lighter or cover our bald patches with a fresh crop of hair.

However, in a positive move, the Health Ministry is doing its bit to enlighten people and penalise the culprits who are playing hard to make big bucks off of gullible people by selling them products that fall short on their claims.

The Health Ministry has suggested bringing in some legislative changes to raise the punishment for misleading advertisements that promote fair skin, anti-hair loss, sexual performance and the like. The proposed punishment calls for five yearsâ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50 lakh.

The Ministry has called for these upgrades under the draft of Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) (Amendment) Bill 2020, which aims to curb the menace of misleading advertisements, regardless of the platform where it is being published.

The Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954 was put into place to protect vulnerable, gullible people from being exploited through advertisements that offer solutions and cures for certain health or cosmetic disorders.

If the suggested amendments are accepted, some leading Bollywood celebrities might have to bear the brunt for promoting all that the health ministry is fighting against.

1. Kartik Aaryan - Fair & Handsome

Kartik has been the face of the brand which, according to its commercial, promotes fair skin to men who deserve to look fairer after a hard dayâs work.

2. Anushka Sharma- Nivea Deodorant

Let alone fair skin, Anushka promotes fairer underarms. I mean what more is there to say?

3. Ranbir Kapoor - Wild Stone

We bet this deodorant doesnât last more than an hour, let alone be as effective as this ad suggests.

4. Alia Bhatt - Garnier

Spotless, lighter skin. Yes sure, Alia has tapped into the magic potion that would make a naturally-fair person fairer!

5. Ranveer Singh - Colgate, Thumbs Up

Tell me this isnât an absolute joke? They have to be kidding us, right, if they think weâll buy this stuff to let our inner daredevil out?

6. Akshay Kumar - Revital H

Sure, Akshay, sure. We know it is only Revital H that has kept you going all these years.

7. Sara Ali Khan - Garnier Face Mask

Dull skin needs âbrighteningâ and not refresh-ning, so trust Sara to give it to you in just 15 minutes!

8. Yami Gautam - Fair & Lovely

The real OG in the scene, Yami has been the face of this brand for ages. And as if lighter skin wasnât enough, she is now promoting the productâs âHD Glowâ.
