Stone Cold Steve Austin vs The Rock at WrestleMania 17 for the WWF Championship is so freakin great. I love this match so much... It's just incredible. pic.twitter.com/XKSlQn2Ar6
The âNo Disqualificationâ match for the WWF Championship title, which was with The Rock at the moment, was made highly prestigious thanks to some brilliant storytelling, some nerve-wracking promos and some nail-biting in-ring performances by the two stars.
According to the narrative, Vince McMahon had made Stone Coldâs then-wife Debra Marshall The Rockâs manager, whoâd get in harmâs way every now and then, because of the fact that The Rock was the champion.
Stone Cold was also portrayed as this hungry fighter who wanted to take the title away from his rival by any means necessary. McMahon, himself, was an active part of the storyline and had made the lives of the two wrestlers an absolute hell.
The brand took its sweet time building up to the match at WrestleMania 17. There were promos in which Stone Cold would offer The Rock a can of beer with an unusual animosity in his eyes, then there were times when The Rock was ready to strike the Texas Rattlesnake with the âRock Bottomâ but whenever the two were found to be sharing the ring, theyâd always end beating each other up.
And then came judgement day. It was a brawl which felt as if the two wrestlers wanted to hurt each other truly and badly. There was blood dripping down from both their heads, they were finding it difficult to breathe because of how long it went for, but somehow, they managed to keep the audience on their toes.
The commentary done by legends like Jim Ross and Paul Heyman sold the match as if Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson had somehow managed to go head to head.
After they tried everything, stole each othersâ finishers and strangled each other with all the submission locks in the world, entered Vince McMahon.
When Austin asked McMahon to bring him the steel chair, that is when he changed into a heel in this storyline. Heâd go on to smash The Rock in the head with the chair a couple of times followed by a barrage of chair shots to his back before finally pinning him and winning the title.
This not only made Austin the champion but also made The Rock look extremely powerful.
It is because of moments like these that this rivalry is still considered to be the best the company would ever have to offer.
The true fans of the profession will completely appreciate how massive this match was for both their careers and also for the company that made millions from it.
