Video Games have been a saviour, to the say the least, around the world after countries went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2020 has been a weird year for everyone, however the one thing that has been keeping people mentally healthy are video games. In fact, even World Health Organisation also recommended  playing games to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

However, a new study spotted by Ladbible found that video games are actually beneficial to kids and people who game regularly, given that they play a few times a week for a reasonable amount of time. In fact, the study found that gamers are more inclined to benefit from gaming than getting involved with other nefarious activities such as drug and alcohol consumption.

The study comes from United Kingdom’s National Literacy Trust, who found that video games can be a genuine route for gamers in reading, creative writing, improving literacy skills and most importantly emotional wellbeing.

More than 4,600 young people aged between 11 to 16 were surveyed for this study in the UK and 75% of them said that gaming helps them feel like they are part of a story. This, in turn, inspired them to read more about the games they are playing and inspired their own creativity in the process. 65% of the respondents said that video games could help them imagine being someone else which implies some form of genuine empathy according to the study.

60% of the respondents also admitted that gaming has the ability to keep their kids in contact with friends and family during lockdown. Keeping in touch with your friends on a regular basis is important for the mental wellbeing of children. Online multiplayer games encourage kids to communicate with their friends and work as a team to win matches or achieve goals in games like Destiny 2.

Jonathan Douglas, chief executive of the National Literacy Trust, said, "This research absolutely suggests that mechanisms that young people themselves already enjoy are the best ways to get them into the wider pattern of reading and writing. It's exciting to uncover the opportunities that video game playing can provide for young people to engage in reading, stimulate creativity through writing, enhance communication with friends and family, and support empathy and wellbeing."

He added, "COVID-19 has significantly disrupted young people's literacy and learning in recent months, and we want to ensure that no stone is left unturned when it comes to identifying new and innovative ways to support children's literacy when they return to school in September.”
