Teardown Reveals iPhone 12, 12 Pro Are Nearly Identical From The Inside And It’s Deja Vu

While Apple would like you to believe that the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are different from each other, a teardown video shows that the two smartphones are nearly identical to each other. In fact, they are so similar, it’s quite hard to differentiate between the two.

When we look closely, both devices have the same L-Shaped printed circuit board (PCB) with the only difference being the additional LiDAR connector on the iPhone 12 Pro. The iPhone 12 does not come with a LiDAR sensor and logically the connector is also missing from the PCB. What’s weird is that the PCB on both phones are so identical that there are plastic fillings for the missing LiDAR and telephoto sensors in the iPhone 12.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro also have the same battery capacity i.e. 2815mAh, however it could have been possible for Apple to house a bigger battery for the iPhone 12, but instead it opted to use the same battery on both devices. Apple probably chose to use the same batteries in order to cut costs. This also means that both devices will more or less have the same battery life.

Most of the components used in both phones are the same which means these components could be interchangeable. This could also be a way for Apple to reduce repair costs for the iPhone, however one can never know if these components are interchangeable.

It’s been long suspected that the only difference between the two models happens to be only in the camera department and this teardown shows exactly that. What’s astonishing is that the two models have a huge price difference especially when there is only a difference in the camera and RAM capacity. Most of the components such as the Taptic Engine, the TrueDepth camera system, display and even Qualcomm's X55 modem chip are all in the same place.

What do you think about the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro being nearly identical but having vastly different prices? Let us know in the comments if this changes your decision for which iPhone 12 to get.
