Josep Bartomeu: Why The Resignation Of Barcelona's Most Hated President Calls For Celebration
After months of pressure, media scrutiny and growing resentment, Barcelona's 40th and arguably most disliked president Josep Maria Bartomeu announced his resignation alongside his board of directors to the sheer jubilation of fans. For someone who rose to power after Sandro Rosell's resignation amid the Neymar transfer saga, Bartomeu's fall was quite similar as had a falling out with club's biggest star Messi.

If the fall-out with the club's biggest star wasn't enough, the fact that Barcelona's finances were in a bad shape further dented Bartomeu's reputation. Big spending, instigated by panic, on salaries and transfer fees added to Barcelona's woes and the pandemic cutting football profits ensured the club, that had extremely high revenues over the years, simply ran out of money.
Tired, embarrassed and frustrated by Bartomeu's disgraceful reign, Barcelona members triggered a vote of no confidence that was set to take place in coming weeks. But, rather getting the collective boot in the high-priority meeting, Bartomeu decided to kick himself out of the position he has undeniably used for his own benefit over the years.
Today I have announced my resignation and that of the rest of the FC Barcelona Board of Directors. Here I explain my reasons and briefly look back at these years in charge.
I am proud to have served the club. Visca el Barça i visca Catalunya! https://t.co/McHLos0f9y
"The easiest thing after the Champions (League defeat) was to resign, but one had to take decisions amid an unprecedented global crisis. Who would have ensured that Messi stayed? Who would have hired a new coach?" Bartomeu, in an apparent attempt to win back fans, said during his televised speech.
