The Samsung Galaxy Note Series Is Expected To Discontinue From Next Year And Here’s Why

Over the past week, we’ve been hearing of rumours that Samsung is going to discontinue the Galaxy Note series from next year and the reason is quite logical. Smartphones are getting bigger each year and with bigger screens, the differences between the Galaxy S and Note Series wasn’t that big apart from the stylus of S Pen. New leaks suggest that upcoming phones by Samsung i.e. the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Fold 3 will be getting the S-Pen and in return, Samsung will cancel the Note series.

The news comes from Korean business daily Aju News along with reports that Samsung intends to add support for the S-Pen to the aforementioned smartphones and will even come with their own slot. Since the S-Pen would be added to these phones, there really won’t be any need for another flagship by Samsung within the same year. It will be the end of an era for Note fans and Samsung as well since the phone first launched in 2011. It was the first device that popularised larger screens which have now become a common feature in smartphones across all OEMs.

Even in our review of the Galaxy Fold 2, our main criticism was the lack of support for the S-Pen. Since the phone opens up and works very much like a small tablet, adding S-Pen support is not only relevant but crucial for operating the large screen. It seems like Samsung is looking to ditch the Note series in favour of foldable phones in the near future. There’s no word whether future foldable phones by the South Korean giant would carry the ‘Note’ nomenclature or the ‘Fold’ branding.

Regardless of the claims, Samsung adding S-Pen support to other smartphones will be a welcome move for the community as fans have been requesting this feature for other Samsung phones apart from the Note series for years. Samsung has reportedly developed a new generation of ‘Ultra-Thin Glass’ that will allow phones like the Fold 3 to recognise input from the S-Pen and also provide good scratch resistance. The under-display camera is also planned for the device for a more seamless experience. However, it will only be implemented if it doesn’t affect the display and camera quality.

Samsung is rumoured to launch the Galaxy S21 series earlier than usual and we will have to wait till January 2021 to see how it pans out. Having said that, due to multiple reports suggesting the cancellation of the Note series, don’t hold your breath for a new Galaxy Note phone in 2021.
