Nitish Kumar Makes Anti-Govt Posts A ‘Crime’ In Bihar & People Ask If We're Still A Democracy

Freedom of speech is one of the most important rights for any citizen and looks like that's under scrutiny now.

In a democratic country, people have a right to share their opposing opinions and yes, of course, have a right to share their disdain over the ruling party and any of their laws they find wrong.

Well, if you start monitoring what people are allowed to say, it will turn into a dictatorship pretty soon.

And, I'm not saying that's what's happening in India right now, but if something isn't done, we might be on our way towards that.

Reportedly, Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, has decided to bring offensive and defamatory social media posts against the government, its ministers, and other officials, under the category of cybercrime.

Of course, any serious threats made online towards anyone should be treated as a crime, but is even criticism coming under fire now?

I mean, even PM Modi himself has said that he welcomes criticism as that's the sign of democracy.

I want this Government to be criticised. Criticism makes democracy strong: PM @narendramodi

What happened here? He has now ordered the state police's Economic Offenses Wing, the nodal point for such crimes, to report and act against those who make them.

A letter written by the chief of the Economic Offences Wing, IG Nayyar Hasnain Khan, to all secretaries of the state government says, "It has come to light that certain persons and organizations have been making defamatory and offensive comments on social media against the government, respected ministers, parliamentarians, legislators, and government officials. This is against prescribed law and comes under the category of cybercrime."

If speaking against the government is a crime, literally, every citizen should be in jail because let's be real, every single person has at one point disagreed with the government, be it the ruling party now, or the one we had before.

Criticizing Nitish Kumar, opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav dared him to arrest him.

https://t.co/wDJfoMqgjT

Saying that he's following Hitler's footsteps, he said,

What does the second person even mean? Do they not know what dictatorship is?

Yes 🏻 .. love to see some dictatorship for urban secular

— Manish Sinha (@Msinha0709BMS) January 22, 2021

We need to stop this.

Can't you see this .......
The small gap between dictatorship and democracy is being diluted and now they look same to you isn't.

You just keep sleeping and watch the dictators how they one they dictate you about how to eat what to wear , where to go , how to talk.
Just wait https://t.co/khPz9SRHLg

— APURV KUMAR(nikm) (@APURVkumar003) January 22, 2021

It needs to be withdrawn.

When Kerala govt planned such a law against social media posts everybody came together including leftists and it was withdrawn. Let's see how many will object to this

— Achilles (@DrNidhn) January 22, 2021

Exactly.

Has Bihar CM forgotten that any Government in a Democracy is by the people of the people and for the people?

We the people of India have every right to question Government if there is failure in proper governance.

More people are daring him to arrest them.

Facists are finally coming out in the open. As long as there's oppression, we'll give a tough fight.
Arrest us, get us murdered. Don't give a damn.
This is a dickhead government.
Get me arrested @NitishKumar https://t.co/KboNeDrr3x

— Tauseef Ahmad (@antinational1o1) January 22, 2021

Yes, please clarify what will lead to jail.

Will have to search and delete all tweets against him. And what is definition of anti govt? Can't we criticize govts now? Anti state and anti govt are different things. https://t.co/QKN3LbBE9w

— Arminius (@Arminiusss) January 22, 2021
