Virat Kohli's 5 Rules For Team India After Taking Over From MS Dhoni

Virat Kohli has transformed India's Test team after taking over the reins from MS Dhoni. While India's limited-overs team was a high-performing unit under Mahi, the Test team was fairly inconsistent especially during the last five years of his tenure. Kohli, however, has not just brought in a touch of consistency but also intensity that teams have often found too hot to handle. In doing so, he's raked up seriously impressive numbers to make a legit claim for India's greatest leader in whites.

With Dhoni having shaped the team and its mindset for such a long time, it probably wasn't easy for Kohli to step into the shoes of such a colossus. Kohli has often stated in his interviews how he set the team a vision for playing Test cricket a certain way. With his single-minded focus at improving India's fortunes in Test cricket, especially abroad, Kohli set certain rules and expectations of his colleagues.

"Virat wanted work ethic, fitness, high fielding standards and trust within the system and also get rid of excuses that this is not right and that went wrong etc etc," revealed India head coach Ravi Shastri during a media interaction post the 4th and final Test against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Shastri, who has become one of the most successful coaches of the Indian cricket team, said man-management was among the most important lessons he picked up after taking over from Anil Kumble as boss. Often mocked and memed by fans, Shastri has been a key architect of this Indian team's rise.

"I didn't know what to expect when I first took up the job. But what I have learnt in the last six years, I haven't in the past 35 years (as a player and commentator). Man management is the most important thing. More important is to understand human behaviour, their instincts, mindsets. How someone reacts to failure, how someone reacts to success, when to talk, whom to talk and whom not to talk," he added.

With India clinching its spot in the ICC World Test Championship final after a 3-1 series win over England, it would be fair to suggest that Kohli has accomplished the vision he set out to achieve. With back-to-back wins over Australia and England, India will go into the finals with an edge over New Zealand.

“We are relieved that now we have made it to the final,” Kohli told BCCI TV after India's crushing win over England in the 4th Test at Ahmedabad.

“Probably if you look at the last two-and-half years how we have played, we deserve to be in that final. Now it’s just about getting together as a group again and focusing on that one big game which is quite exciting for all of us,” he added.

The WTC final will be played at Southampton between June 18 and 22. However, if Kohli will be at the WTC final, who will lead India at the Asia Cup?
