The Indian Premier League is considered to be the biggest cash cow for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as it churns out more than 50% of the organisation’s annual revenue based on a report by IANS.

However, the 2020 edition of the T20 league turned out to be the one with numerous financial and logistical crises which ended up impacting the money it generated over the course of a month and a half.

One of the biggest problems was the dismissal of Chinese tech giant Vivo as the title sponsor following the rising tensions between Indian and Chinese soldiers at the Galwan Valley back in June 2020.

Another issue was that the entire tournament took place in the United Arab Emirates and that too behind closed doors, cutting various sources of income ranging from ticket sales to merchandise and food purchase at the venue.

“The Indian Premier League’s valuation dropped for the first time in six years” according to a report by Bloomberg. The report further added that in terms of numbers, the franchisee saw a $6.2 billion dip.

5. SunRisers Hyderabad (-8.5%):

Despite facing a lot of criticism in terms of not being able to score at a high rate, the 2016 IPL champions switched gears in the latter half of the season and ended up making it to the third spot in the points table. Unfortunately, their comeback effort couldn’t help them witness a drop of Rs. 41 crore in brand value after their campaign ended.

Even though one of the most popular cricketers in the world, Virat Kohli captains the RCB side, his fame wasn’t enough to protect the franchise from seeing a devaluation worth Rs. 59 crore despite sneaking their way into the playoffs.

3. Kings XI Punjab/Punjab Kings (-11.3%):

Punjab Kings experienced a massive decline in brand value between 2019 and 2020 worth Rs. 40 crore despite a great start to the season and a powerful duo of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal leading their batting lineup. 

2. Kolkata Knight Riders (-13.7%):

The two-time IPL champions failed to make it to the playoffs despite playing some incredible cricket late in the league-round. However, they lost a lot more than their shot at winning the title when they experienced a drop from Rs. 629 crore in 2019 to Rs. 543 crore in 2020 in terms of brand value.

The biggest slump however came for the second-most successful team in the history of the league, both in terms of on-field performance and valuation. Even with Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is considered to be a brand in himself, leading the CSK from ahead, became ineffective in terms of protecting the value of his team. At the end of the 2019 season, the runners-up were valued at a whopping Rs. 732 crore. By 2020, the number dropped to Rs. 611 crore - a tough Rs. 121 crore plummet.
