‘Felt Worthless’ Prithvi Shaw Recalls Crying Alone After Being Dropped In Aus & Fans Get Emo

Prithvi Shaw’s Australia struggle has to be one of the most polarising incidents in the history of modern-day cricket. While some fans felt sorry for the 21-year-old after he got dropped from the Indian squad after just one match, others felt that it was necessary as one of the most important series was on the line and the team had better replacements.

From the team’s point of view, it can be argued that skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s call to substitute Shaw with Shubman Gill was the right call since India remained undefeated for the rest of the series and ended up winning 2-1 with a significant role played by the series debutant in Gill.

However, if you put yourself in the shoes of the man at the cost of which Gill got his shot, it has to sting.

In a conversation with The Indian Express, Shaw relived the moment he was dropped from the squad and ‘the talk’ he had with himself to get ready for what was to come.

“I was in complete tension when I was dropped after the first Test. I got a feeling like I was worthless though I was happy that the team was doing well. I said to myself ‘I need to pull up my socks’. There is a saying, ‘hard work beats talent’. I told myself all this talent is fine but it’s of no use if I don’t work hard. It was the saddest day of my life (when he was dropped). I went to my room and broke down. I felt like something wrong was happening. I needed answers quickly.”

Ever since coming back to India and not being a part of the team for the touring England side, the only thing that Shaw had to look forward to was playing for Mumbai during the 2020-21 Vijay Hazare Trophy and he knew what he had to do - get “big-daddy runs”.

“Once you are dropped from the team there is pressure to perform and make a comeback. I am keen to get runs. I wanted to get big-daddy runs,” Shaw said in the interview.

Since the beginning of the domestic cricket tournament, the batsman has been on an absolute tear. His undefeated 227 is the highest individual score in the history of the league and with the semi-final winning 165 he struck against Ravikumar Samarth’s Karnataka side, he broke Mayank Agarwal’s 723-run record to score the most number of runs in a single season.

And while there are still a vast number of fans who believe Shaw’s dominance is only limited to domestic cricket and that his weaknesses are exposed at the highest level of the game, there are a few who believe that there is a lot in the young athlete to give to this sport and with age still on his side, he can make a heroic return to the team once again.

There's no reason why he cant come back ,he's still quite young

Management harsh on him to bench him just after one match. Now, Gill also failed in Indian condition more than one match but he will not be benched for next. And which is right. Should have given more chance.
