It seems that certain cricket “experts” & commentators can’t have enough of those “foot in the mouth” moments

In yet another “egg on the face” moment, the former England captain turned commentator, Michael Vaughan tweeted that he believed the Mumbai Indians team were better at the T20 than the Indian National team.

The @mipaltan are a better T20 team than @BCCI !!! #JustSaying #INDvENG

— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) March 12, 2021

While there is no doubt that the Mumbai Indians team is one of the best cricketing teams in the world, comparing them to a national team, that too the Indian National Team is actually a moot point, for a number of reasons.

First of all, teams from sports league as big as the IPL have access to the best players all over the world, something that most national teams, usually do not.

Secondly, what makes Vaughan’s comparison seem even more senile, is the fact that one or two performances notwithstanding, the Indian National Team is one of the best and most consistent teams across all formats.

Of course, Vaughan’s tweet wasn’t going to be taken lightly - one should know that in a nation as cricket-centric as India, one needs to choose their words rather carefully.

Wasim Jaffer’s dignified response to Vaughan’s tweet was a rather savage burn. Taking a dig at the fact that more often than not, England’s national team has had to depend on players from other countries to play for them, this is what he said -

Not all teams are lucky enough to play four overseas players Michael #INDvENG https://t.co/sTmGJLrNFt

A user, very promptly put up a list of the current overseas players currently playing for England -

Jason Roy born in Durban, SA
Jofra Archer born in Barbados
Eoin Morgan born in Dublin, Ireland
Ben Stokes born in Christchurch, NZ
Chris Jordan born in Barbados

Vaughan tried to slide the last word in, by reminding how he had gotten Jaffer out at their match in Lords -

Have you still not recovered from me getting you out at Lords !?? https://t.co/K1Us0ci7Yo

However, Desi Twitter had Jaffer’s back.

That sums it up pretty well...

England a team with an irish as the captain, new Zealander as premier allrounder, and jofra and jorden as the main pasers with rashid as the spinner.

Anyway, this certainly won’t be the last time we see such a tweet from Vaughan. But, as long as it is in jest and fun, no harm no foul, right?

What do you guys think? Should tweets such as Vaughan’s be taken this seriously?
