5 Movies Like ‘Pagglait’ Which Perfectly Describe Dysfunctional Families In A Funny Way

Netflix’s latest offering, Pagglait, starring Sanya Malhotra in the lead role is winning major accolades everywhere. The movie tells a very simple tale of a young widow, who tries to come to terms with the reality of her husband’s death and decides to take her life in her own hands. The background characters do a wonderful job of serving as catalysts for change and represent the typical ‘rishtedaar’ in a big Indian family. If you enjoyed the movie and want to watch something else with a similar vibe, then check these out:

1. Queen

This one has a strong resemblance with the tone of how the storyline of Pagglait steers forward. A woman breaking stereotypes, fighting taboos of the family that surrounds her and leaving for her own honeymoon after the husband-to-be is a no show at a wedding. Queen opened doors for small budget movies to tell strong tales with brilliantly written characters.

2. Badhai Ho

Another movie which tackles a very unique subject of how the family and the society perceive a pregnant couple who already has a grown up son. The son himself finds it difficult to come to terms with his parents expecting a baby and his relationship with his partner is exposed to a lot of emotions.

3. Door Ke Darshan

This was one of the best watched and underrated movies that was released in 2020. The story revolves around a mad, loud, quintessential Punjabi family. The story follows the matriarch of the family who wakes up from a coma after 30 years and the family tries to bring her to terms with the ‘new’ reality.

4. Chupke Chupke

One of the best classics of the golden times, if you are a 90’s kid like me, chances are that you have watched this movie numerous times with your parents while growing up. The protagonist, Dr. Parimal Tripathi (Dharmendra), takes upon a challenge of fooling his wife’s ‘jija ji’ and shows up as a driver in his house. This is a dysfunctional comedy because no one in their right mind will make their husband a driver in the family and then try to ‘fake’ an affair with him. Nevertheless, great comic timing by everyone.

5. Do Dooni Chaar

This one stars Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor in the lead as middle-class parents who are trying very hard to fulfil the wishes of their children and enjoy the little joys of life. Things get crazy when the family is overwhelmed with materialism and vow to buy a brand new car. If you are from Delhi, then the scenes with a complaining ‘bua ji’, judgemental neighbours and random aunties drying clothes in balconies will bring back childhood memories.
