Following the decision by many nations including the UK and the US of discouraging their citizens from travel to India, the Maldives has decided to ban flights from India due to the fear of Covid-19 cases in the country.

The Maldives' Ministry of Tourism used its official Twitter handle to issue the announcement on Sunday (April 27).

With effect from 27 April @HPA_mv suspends tourists travelling from #India to #Maldives from staying at tourist facilities in inhabited islands. We thank you for the support in our endeavour to make tourism safest possible with minimum inconvenience.

The small archipelagic state had been the ultimate tourist destination for people across the world at a time when most nations required different quarantine periods.

Many within India including celebrities and other people had departed for the nation during the pandemic to celebrate holidays or honeymoons at resorts or other places in the country.
