Meet Saran Kohli, The Indian Designer Behind Some Of The Dope Costumes From Marvel’s ‘Eternals’

One of the biggest movies that we are about to get in Marvel’s next phase is the Eternals.

Starting from a seriously cool-looking plotline to an ensemble of actors that includes the likes of Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie & Kumail Nangiani, the film is all set to be one heck of an experience.

Not many people know this, but the film has quite a few desi connections.

There’s an Indian wedding, a Bollywood-like dance sequence, and of course, Harish Patel, aka Ibu Hatela in the film

And then, there are the dope-looking costumes that we see in the film, that were, in fact, designed by an Indian designer.

Saran Kohli is a London-based designer of Indian origin who was approached by the creative folks at Marvel to help them out with the designs of a few costumes.

In fact, he designed about 52 costumes that we will see in the dance sequence and a few portions of the outfit that we see on Kumail Nangiani himself.

In a recent interview with the Times Of India, the designer opened up about his experience of working with Marvel, and how he was approached by the costumes team to help them out.

Kohli himself has a very aristocratic appeal and style. And how can we miss that glorious looking, perfectly twirled handlebar moustache that he dons?

In the past, he has dressed people like David Beckham for a number of magazines and publications based out of England, so we know what exactly he is capable of.

As for his personal style, it is classy, elegant, and royal.

Suffering from vitiligo, Kohli has been very vocal as an advocate to create awareness of vitiligo, and combat the social stigma that surrounds the condition.

To that effect, he has designed a series of masks, called the Vitiligo Face Masks.

Coming back to his work for the Marvel movie, he says that initially, he did not realise that this was going to be a Marvel film, as the people who had approached him, weren’t exactly forthright about it.

“Initially, they didn't even tell me if it was for a film. They just told me that they are looking for some costumes for this scene that has got a bit of a dance sequence. Later when they sent an email, the film name was different, it was a made-up name of a film. They asked me to meet them at the Pinewood Studios.”

For some time Kohli thought that this was going to be a Bollywood movie. “Later, when I spoke to one of the heads of the costume department at Marvel, I realized it was something big for sure," he says.”

Eternals is scheduled to release on 5th November later this year.

However, given how the situation is in the country right now, a theatrical release might not be feasible. Perhaps we have to make do with an OTT release.
