‘Stop, You Lost Already’ Virat Kohli’s Three-Match WTC Final Proposal Gets Mixed Reactions

Soon after losing the World Test Championship final to New Zealand, Virat Kohli spoke about the International Cricket Council’s decision to make it a one-off Test and not a series of more than one match.

"I think it has to happen over a period of three games minimum. It has to be a test of character over three Tests...(that) will be a good measure of how things really are,” Kohli said in the post-match press conference.

"We are not too bothered by this result because we understand as a Test side what we've done over the last three or four years, not just over the last 18 months… This is not a measure of who we are as a team," he added.

Essentially, the Indian skipper felt that in order to truly establish who is the better team of the two sides playing in a Test match, four innings are not enough and that the competition should be stretched to at least a three match series.

One Test match is scheduled to take place over at least five days (six if Reserve Days are utilised just like it was in the WTC final). If what Kohli is suggesting is implied, it would mean that the WTC finals would run for over 15 years. Given the complexities of various international tours and franchise-cricket tournaments that take place throughout the year, taking out a 15-day gap for the top two teams based on a points system would definitely be a tough nut to crack.

While many considered the skipper’s proposal to make sense, others felt that it was impractical and took away the essence of the ‘Final’ match which, by default, means one last game.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan also made an interesting point:

Where in the schedule would it fit in ?? Are the IPL going to reduce the year of the final tournament by 2 weeks so it could fit in ? Doubt it ..: Finals are one off games where teams/individuals know they have to deliver … that’s what makes them so great https://t.co/MhqHkp5lvH

Others weren’t too eager to hop on the three-match Finals idea either.

I think 3 match series in a final is not a practical idea.

3 tests = 15 days
3 or 4 Day rest between each Test
Need at least one week preparation

So around one month you need to conduct the final and taking that time from FTP will affect the boards as well.

Rubbish. It’s like saying if you lose the toss, toss again

Crib. Batting should have been more mature. We cannot lose the first test of every foreign tour. Adaptability has to be faster.
Also Siraj should have been in places of Ishant

This is an excuse given by @imVkohli .Players don't give excuses, you are playing international cricket not Gully cricket.
