‘Bye-Bye Pujara?’ BCCI Teases Chance Of Kohli Batting At 3, New Names May Enter Playing XI

Losing the World Test Championship final to Kane Williamson and the New Zealand roster, Virat Kohli had spoken about bringing a significant overhaul within the Indian cricket team and it looks like the speculations of who stays and who leaves have already begun.

According to a recent report by the Times of India, Indian skipper Virat Kohli may be moving up by one spot to start batting at the number three position while giving up the middle order space to a batsman who may be a new inclusion with the regular Playing XI roster.

Before the five-Test series between India and England which will begin in August, the report speculates that the new batsman would be either KL Rahul or Hanuma Vihari.

This would, by default mean, that the WTC final was the end of the line for the Indian Test veteran Cheteshwar Pujara, who was the team constant at one-down for a long period of time and in fact did a phenomenal job at withstanding early attacks with a new ball, and gaining control of the pace of the game for the Men in Blue.

Having said that, Pujara, who averages 46.1 at a strike rate of 44.6 in red-ball cricket, struck his last century in the longest format of the game over two and a half years ago back in Australia in January 2019.

It is also suggested that upon the ineffectiveness shown by the Indian spinners during the WTC final, changes will be made to accommodate pacers like Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur in the mix.

"We will continue to reassess and continue to have conversations around what are the things required to strengthen our side and not follow or fall prey to certain patterns," Kohli said at the virtual press conference after the WTC final, which India lost by eight wickets.

"We will not wait for a year or so and have to plan ahead. If you see our white-ball team now, we have great depth and guys are ready and confident. The same thing needs to be done with Test cricket,” he added.

"You have to reassess and replan and understand what dynamics work for the team and how we can be fearless. Bring in (the) right people who have (the) right mindset to perform," said the Indian skipper.
