Dhoni, Kohli Fans Clash After Suryakumar Leaves ‘Thala’ Out Of His All-Time IPL XI

MS Dhoni is one of the most successful players in the Indian Premier League history and his record, both as the leader and the batsman, makes him a contender for the all-time greatest player.

With 208 appearances, the Chennai Super Kings skipper is the most capped player in the history of the tournament and has scored 4,669 runs. When you take into consideration the position where he has batted for the major part of his career, it makes his figures look all the more astonishing.

For some fans, Dhoni is the greatest IPL player ever and they were surprised when Mumbai Indians batsman Suryakumar Yadav left him out of his all-time IPL XI.

To be fair to the MI cricketer, he was given two conditions and he had to pick a team fulfilling both of them. He was told he couldn’t leave himself out of the playing XI and was allowed to pick only four MI players.

Suryakumar Yadav’s All-Time IPL XI:

Jos Buttler (WK)
Rohit Sharma
Virat Kohli
Suryakumar Yadav
AB Devilliers
Hardik Pandya
Andre Russell
Ravi Jadeja
Rashid Khan
Jasprit Bumrah
Mohammed Shami

Two Rules: Need to pick himself and only 4 MI players allowed.

SKY’s decision to leave Dhoni out started a huge debate on social media between Virat Kohli and Thala supporters as they argued who deserved a place in the XI more -- someone who has won three titles or someone who is the tournament’s leading run-scorer.

Apart from Dhoni’s omission, another big surprise was him picking Jos Buttler to open the innings ahead of David Warner, who is the most successful overseas batsman in the history of the tournament.

If we go by records, there is no opener who could challenge Warner for the opener’s slot and the Australian would easily walk into any IPL team, although that’s a different thing that he was stripped of his captaincy and was dropped to the bench earlier this year.

Warner has scored 5,447 runs at an insane average of 42.22, with the help of 50 half-centuries and based on just stats no one comes close.

However, Suryakumar felt otherwise and left everyone surprised, including Warner himself, who took to the micro-blogging site and commented: “Can’t believe he’s left me out”.

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are two of the most successful franchises in IPL history, winning five and three titles respectively. The rivalry between the two sides is often dubbed as the ‘El Clasico’ of IPL and fans wondered if this rivalry was what kept Suryakumar from picking more CSK players in his IPL XI.

Not just CSK fans, even MI fans questioned him for leaving the T20 legend Lasith Malinga out, who wore the same jersey for several years.

Kohli is the higher run getter in ipl 🤣

He picked one to get a place in MI playing XI and one another to get a place in Indian Playing XI.He felt there's no use in supporting retired Indian legends and left out The great Mr. IPL and the greatest of all times captain cool...I Wonder whether he watch IPL matches or not🤦🏻‍♂️

— Nishanth (@Nish_7781) July 10, 2021

I won't question about not having Dhoni/ Raina/ Bravo... That's his choice. But not having Malinga in 4 MI players???

— Kestrel (@bird_of_dreams) July 10, 2021

IPL XI is incomplete without Malinga

— R A T N I S H (@LoyalSachinFan) July 10, 2021

Exactly , he is very very overrated
Clearly MSD >>> Hardik
Hardik is the most overrated player I have ever seen

— Kavish 🇮🇳 (@Kavish1248) July 10, 2021

Disappointed with Dhoni’s omission, some die-hard fans even suggested which player should have made way for the CSK skipper.

Suryakumar picked Hardik Pandya and Andre Russell as two fast bowling all-rounders and people suggested that the former was the most overrated player they had ever seen in their life and that Dhoni should’ve been picked ahead of him.
