    India is set to host its first ever Global Citizen Festival on 19th November and it has already garnered a lot of excitement as it will be Coldplay’s debut performance in the country. Now, it has gotten even better as the festival has roped in Jay Z and Demi Lovato as well.
    The festival, to be held at the MMRDA Grounds, Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, will also have a mix of Bollywood actors and musicians.
    “With over half a million young Indians taking over 1.8 million actions in support of our campaigns, earning their free tickets for the inaugural Global Citizen India Festival, it is exhilarating to see that the youth of India won’t wait for change," Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans said in a statement. "We are thrilled to be launching this 15-year journey to end extreme poverty in India with the support of Coldplay, Jay Z and Demi Lovato and incredible Indian superstars like A.R. Rahman and Farhan Akhtar."
    Similar to the Global Citizen festivals held in New York, the Indian edition also offered free tickets to people who completed social tasks as part of festival’s Action Journey. The festival aims to raise funds for children without parents and for 25 children's homes in India.
    Indian artists slated to appear at the festival include: actor Aamir Khan, Oscar-winning film composer A.R. Rahman, Arijit Singh, Amitabh Bachchan, Dia Mirza, Farhan Akhtar, Frieda Pinto, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Katrina Kaif, Monali Thakur, Ranveer Singh, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Shraddha Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana, Malaika Arora Khan, Parineeti Chopra, Sachin Tendulkar, Sakshi Malik, Sonakshi Sinha, Shah Rukh Khan, Vijender Singh and more.

    The ongoing test match in Rajkot is turning out to be a batsman’s wet dream and no doubt that after English batsmen, the Indian batsmen too are milking it out in the middle. This, however, is not so great news for those fans who predicted a 5-0 result, especially considering that England had lost the last test match in Bangladesh against Bangladesh.

    But can Virat Kohli still force a result in the match? For someone whose mantra in the test matches has been of attacking cricket and nothing else, it does seem like a possibility. Let’s consider what could happen if Virat Kohli decides to take a gamble and play it like he means it. If India are to have any chance of winning the test match, Kohli needs to make England believe that they too have a chance.
    For the scheme to work, however, Kohli will have to declare the innings before the total reaches 500. It’ll send out a signal to the England team that India is here to win the match and will not let the game drift away to a dull draw. It will also give the Indian bowlers especially the spinners a chance tomorrow after lunch to test the England batting lineup on a deteriorating pitch.

    The chances of it happening are minimal. The conditions for spinners are ripe but to scalp 10 wickets cheaply will need a lot of hard work, especially because the England batting line-up goes deep. But what Virat Kohli and co need to assess is if it’s worth it to force a result in the first test of a five test series? And if they do decide to go that way, giving away a lead of say 40 runs, till when do they pursue their plans and go for it if England counterattacks.
    Whatever be the case, Kohli now needs to put his money where his mouth is and not be afraid of chasing 200 in the last two sessions of the final day at Rajkot, because in the end, he will be remembered for the risks he took even if they don’t bring any gains eventually.

    The centre has declared on Thursday that RBI will soon be issuing new 1000, 100 and 50 Rs notes which will replace the existing ones. These new notes are said to have new design and features. They will gradually be released into the system and the older notes will slowly be phased out.

    At the Economic Editors’ Conference on Thursday, the Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das said   “The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is going to monitor the release of the Rs.2,000 notes, and in due course, (and) within a few months, the Rs. 1,000 note will be reintroduced into the market with completely new dimensions, new design and new color from the old one,”.
    He also confirmed that denomination of notes will be re-introduced with new designs and added security features. However, the existing currency notes will continue to have legal tender status. “The legal tender status of the existing â¹100 and â¹50 notes will continue,” said Mr. Das.
    Sources have claimed that the new designs will soon be released in the coming months and while these new notes are much awaited, they are likely to be issued in the next three to four months.

    The world isn’t a very accepting place. You’re always too fat or too thin or too tall or too short or too talkative or if nothing else, just too perfect. At an age where kids are the most impressionable, they’re mocked for being different, their confidence shredded to pieces because people around don’t think they’re ‘normal’. It would have been a notch harder for Noelia Garella, for she was born with Down Syndrome.
    All her life, she was called names. She was refused admission at school because the nursery teachers thought she looked like a ‘monster’. She’s now 31 years old and is making sure more kids like her have a happier childhood. Yes, she’s a teacher – Argentina’s first with Down Syndrome. Hers is a truly inspiring story.

    She always knew she wanted to be a teacher when she grew up but considering not many schools wanted to educate her, she beat a lot of odds to be where she is today. Must have been hard, but well, Noelia was always a true fighter!
    When she wanted to start her career as a teacher, there was obvious opposition because she was suffering from Down Syndrome. But her determination and confidence got her all the support she needed to bring about a change in this otherwise judgemental world.
    "We very quickly realized that she had a strong vocation. She gave what the children in the nursery classes most appreciate, which is love," said Alejandra Senestrari, the former director of the school she now teaches in.

    "I adore this. Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to be a teacher, because I like children so much," Garella said. At 31 years of age, Garella is doing what she loves the most and needless to say, her students find her all the more special. "I want them to read and listen, because in society people have to listen to one another," Garella added.
    Kudos to Garella for breaking stereotypes and bringing in a ray of hope for thousands of people across the world suffering from Down Syndrome.

    The medals which will be used in the next Olympics, to be held in Tokyo, will be made out of recycled mobiles and gadgets, according to the organizers.
    Tokyo is set to host the Games in 2020 and this step will make the competition a more environment friendly edge. 
    "Medals made with recycled metals from discarded mobile phones and other gadgets can be a symbol of sustainability and public participation," spokeswoman Hikariko Ono told reporters.

    Although, Ono added, that whether some or all medals will use recycled material will be decided later on.
    Ono further said that the Games have been using recycled material for medals since the Vancouver Winter Olympics since 2010. Even this year’s Rio Olympics used recycled metal Gold and Bronze medals.

    The cost efficiency of these medals remains unclear though. According to experts, the total budget of the Games could reach USD 30 billion - four times the initial estimate and almost triple that of the 2012 London Olympics.

    Shah Rukh Khan has ruled hearts of fans, especially women, for decades, and the charm refuses to fade. If there was a course on how to woo women, Shah Rukh would feature on top. The charisma of the man is so magnetic, his fans range from 20-year-olds to 70-year-olds. Yes, 70. A 70-year-old woman who goes by the Twitter handle of Sandi Mann is a diehard fan of the Badshah and tweet to him on HER 70th birthday:

    Harsha Suryanarayana is considered a legend in coding circles. Ever since the programming boom began in India in the early 90’s Computer Science graduates from top engineering colleges took over the IT industry by storm. And Humblefool (Harsha’s coding username) was a product of that generation.

    Back in his school days he was a cool headed, intelligent middle class boy who didn’t break a sweat scoring a perfect hundred 100 in not one but three subjects. Even during that time Harsha didn’t think it was a big feat to achieve. As he went on to pursue his engineering degree from IIIT Ahmadabad where his coding skills would earn him the title of Lord Harsha from his peers, Humblefool impressed many with his simple ways and incredible knowledge. One of his fellow colleagues in college remembers the man behind Humblefool:
    “I believe I was in my 3rd semester, there was some tech fest at my college IIIT Allahabad and Harsha was on the stage talking something, I was busy organizing something, so I couldn't hear what he was saying (my bad luck, I should have paid attention). I knew about Lord Harsha already by then, I knew his coding skills and fame from my seniors in college. Around 50 of them from all the batches stood up from their seats came in front of the stage and bowed down to him on their knees and people who were doing this increased in number slowly until he got down from the stage. This summarizes what he is,” explains Pavan Lanka on Quora.

    Harsha founded three startups. But immediately after graduating from IIT Ahmadabad he didn’t take a plush job in Microsoft or Amazon but decided to help his juniors for ACM ICPC contest as he believed that the hegemony of IIT’s in every programming contest should be broken. Humblefool himself was a Red on Top Coder. He was also the highest ranked coder from India for a number of years starting 2007 on the most revered competitive coding platform in the world. The extent of his genius can be gauged from this emotional write-up by one of his friends Lokendra Kaushik on Facebook.
    “He could read at 100+ pages per hour. He finished Economics by Samuelson during a train journey from Bangalore to Allahabad. He used very refined vocabulary, could speak French and pronounce the most difficult foreign-language words with consummate ease. He was among the best in all the computer games we used to play. He was very fond of strategy games like Simcity, Civilization, Age of Empires, Heroes, Chess, Go, Counter Strike. During his final year, he represented India in ACM ICPC World Finals. He entered in 86 component design competitions and won 45 of them competing with the best on Topcoder. He also featured as designer of quarter. Besides Topcoder, he ranked 31 in Google Code Jam World finals 2008. That he was the best programmer in India, I guess, would not be an overstatement,” wrote Kaushik on 20th July 2016, five days after Harsha was killed in a hit and run in Bangalore.

    Humblefool was a great influential figure in the coding circles and the impact that he had because of his social and coding skills went far beyond his IT accomplishments at the time. After his death SRM 625 was dedicated to the memory of Harsha Suryanarayana.

    This is what the text reads: “[topcoder] Single Round Match 625 is dedicated to [topcoder] member Harsha Suryanarayana known under his handle humblefool. He tragically died after being hit by a car on June 15, 2014. humblefool was a [topcoder] member since October, 2005. During his more than 8 years with [topcoder], he competed in 238 algorithm matches where he reached red rating in October, 2007. At the current moment, Harsha is the highest rated [topcoder] member in algorithm track among all 2281 active coders from India. He was also very active in component design track, submitting in 86 competitions and winning 45 of them.
    The match will award $5,000 in prizes in honor of humblefool. The prizes of $200 will be awarded to best 20 performers in Div-1 and the prizes of $100 will be awarded to best 10 performers in Div-2. All members will be given an option to donate their prizes to Harsha's wife.”
     Working with startups and making a living of coding contests, Harsha believed in a minimalist lifestyle. One of his co-founders, Animesh vividly remembers him as one of the good guys who was satisfied with what he had achieved in his life.
    "Inspired by initiatives like the Khan Academy, I started creating educational videos to teach programming and started publishing them on YouTube under the name 'MyCodeSchool’ . Everyone, including my family asked me every now and then, how will you make money? And I had no answer. I just said, ‘I don't know’. People will only advise me to be practical and acknowledge that money is important. Then I started talking to Harsha. Till then, I had not known him so closely. He encouraged me to carry on without giving a damn about anything. He said that people like him who believe in giving back will help me. Educational videos do not make much ads revenue on YouTube. One fine day, I told him that I turned on ads on YouTube and I am making $2 a day. He was like, ‘It’s a lot of money man; you can buy a meal.’  He always said that it’s the social conditioning because of which we think we need a lot of money. And he lived with less. He never bought a car of his own. He never bought a house. He would mostly be seen in a T-shirt won in a programming contest and carrying a bag and that too won in a programming contest or Hackathon. After some time, he joined me full-time and we started working together."

    It was because of coders like him that the programming revolution gained momentum so quickly in India. He is already a tech legend for the next generation of programmers in the country and his life is a testament to the fact that some people do not need billion dollar startups to succeed and be satisfied, some guys just do it because they love to code.

    Samsung has been showing a lot of interest in foldable phones these days and according to their latest patent application, it has renders of a phone that folds and looks like a flip phone when folded from the middle. 
    The Korean company is expected to release a phone that bends within the next year and it is not certain if this new found patent has anything to do with these claims. According to the render, the design of the bendable phone may have interesting features if this feat can be pulled off.

    Folding a phone in half makes it easier for users to carry it around and the phone’s inward bending feature could be comfortable to hold ergonomically. Samsung has been experimenting with foldable/bendable phones for quite some time and previous patents have showed that Samsung is not only experimenting with bending smartphones but also a phone which can roll up like a scroll. 
    Bending/Folding phones may face huge obstacles as the screen being used in the phones need to agile and have capabilities to move without cracking or breaking. It also means that it shouldn’t affect any of the components inside the phone and of course have a bendable battery. 
    All we have to do now is to wait for Samsung to acknowledge the phone for us to go bat-shit crazy. The future is almost here!

    According to several reports, Delhi is now the most polluted city in the world—which basically means we are living and breathing pollution! Is it affecting your skin and hair? Yes! Can it make you bald? Eventually! Having said that, there are little ways to make sure that your hair doesn’t completely fall off.
    We spoke to celebrity hairstylist Rod Anker (from Rod Anker Salons) on 5 (totally easy and affordable) ways to protect your hair:

    1) Firstly, get used to washing your hair everyday. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY! No it’s not going to make it fall out (that’s a myth). Washing your hair will remove the disgusting polluted air particles from your hair and scalp. Always use conditioner!  
    2) Use a clarifying shampoo, once a week, to deep cleanse your hair and scalp. Again, using a conditioner is must!
    3) Wear a cap when travelling to avoid exposing your hair to pollution
    4) Use filtered water on your hair
    5) Always wash your hair with Sulfate free shampoo only. 
    Will this help? Yes. It may not be a foolproof idea to protect your hair (from pollutants), but will certainly help to remove pollutants and free radicals  from your hair—that can cause bacterial infections and itchy scalp!

    Shah Rukh Khan recently completed 25 years in Bollywood, which also meant, 25 years of being the biggest superstar India has ever seen and the most loved man ever. He launched his biography and of course, it called for one of his speeches that would leave people talking about for months to come. Obviously, he didn’t disappoint. The man who’s usually always at his witty best gave an extremely heartfelt speech thanking every person who helped him become the star that he is today and it was a wonderful insight into his humble side. Usually cocky AF, here’s SRK being grateful and winning hearts all over again!

    Movember (or No Shave November) is a movement that originated in 2004, and is all about growing out one’s facial hair to raise awareness about health issues no one talks about—prostate cancer being one of them!     It's November— where are you right now, how are you feeling, what are you eating, drinking and listening to? 
    Winters  for me means taking time off work, to travel and explore off-beat places on my own. But right now, I’m home listening to old Hindi classics, and eating regular home cooked food and drinking tonnes of water. 
    Tell us about your beard timeline. How long have you been growing it? Any special beard stories: 
    My beard has been with me forever! It's like my identity. I know that it’s on-trend to sport a beard now, but I have always been this man—with long locks and a full beard.  I have often bizarrely been compared to (Jesus) Christ or a poet or a musician, and I find that quite fascinating. I think the actor in me loves the character comparisons...

    Do you use products? If so, what are your favourite beard products?
    Not really, and after having modelled for eons, I don't believe in using any artificial products. They are quick to give results, but in the end if it they are all about chemicals...and I try and stay away as much as I can!

    How do you maintain your beard? Tell us your daily routine. 
    I daily routine is pretty simple—I shampoo, condition and trim at regular intervals to keep my beard healthy.

    Has growing a full beard changed your sense of style? Do you dress differently when you have a full beard? 
    I believe that the scruffier the beard, the sharper you need to dress. And this rule is something I like to follow every time I’m dressing up. To me there is something very harmonic about a scruffy beard paired with  a sharp suit. 
    One advice for boys trying to grow their beards?
    Go with the flow, own your beard and don’t try too hard!

    All of us know that, earlier this week 500 and 1000 Rupee notes were demonetized by our PM. The whole country was shook but yet the majority of commoners reacted to this decision with overwhelming support. While declaring the ban of 500 and 1000 Rupee notes, it was made pretty clear that hospitals, petrol pumps, railway stations, etc will accept these notes for the next 72 hours, that is, till 11th Nov. As a result people rushed to these establishments in hope of getting change and there were a lot of disagreements and ambushes.
    The Petrol Dealers’ Association has reportedly written to the state level coordinator and informed him that Petrol pumps across Mumbai and Maharashtra will remain closed for a period of seven hours ( from after midnight tonight till 7 in the morning) to avoid late night squabbles and will open at 7 am on 12th November .
    According to a source from the association “The association has decided to shut pumps from midnight to avoid any untoward incidents. After the demonetization was announced, most pumps were expected to shell out change for the old Rs 500 or Rs 1000 notes. But everyone quickly ran out of change. So they continued to provide the fuel, but asked customers to give exact change.”
    “Although we have been instructed to stop accepting the older notes from November 11 midnight, there is a possibility that people who have been unable to exchange their old notes till now might try to spend them after midnight. If our staffers refuse, it could lead to altercations with motorists. To avoid that, we have decided to open the pumps at 7 am on November 12 and simply accept the newer currency or smaller denominations.”
    All we have seen this week are stories of disruptions of everyday life, so, we hope the inconveniences are soon left behind and the life of the average Indian quickly gets back to normal.

    Finland has done the unthinkable. The country that was already acclaimed for having one of the finest education systems in t the world has decided to scrap all academic subjects altogether. That means no more maths, physics, chemistry, social studies, so to say.
    “There are schools that are teaching in the old-fashioned way which was of benefit in the beginning of the 1900s — but the needs are not the same, and we need something fit for the 21st century." Head of Department of Education in Helsinki, Marjo Kyllonen, said.

    Instead of the pure academics subjects, students will be taught about world events and scientific phenomenon, not divided on the basis of their scientific or historical relevance but as a whole. The new curriculum will be interdisciplinary and will cover all aspects of a particular event/phenomenon. So, if students are being taught about the world war, they’ll be taught about it from a historical, geographical, political level. 
    The revamped curriculum will be introduced at the senior level, to students 16 years and above. What's great is that students will be able to choose what event they want to study based on their interest. So, if you hate Maths but love science, you won't have to suffer through it at the higher secondary level. 
    The traditional education system we have today is redundant. We are carrying on with an arrangement that hasn’t changed much in the last 100 years!  
     If we had it in India, no student would ever flunk in exams!

    We all knew when Trump won the presidential elections that bigotry and hate crimes would escalate in due time. However, it was unexpected and unprecedented to see such acts to be heightened already as Donald Trump’s manifesto is being taken to the literal sense by some citizens of USA.
    Pro-Trump graffiti and racist slurs were reportedly painted inside a high school. A Muslim woman was robbed by men who support Trump (She was wearing a hijab). Trump’s stance for fostering Islamophobia and xenophobia are being used as justification by his supporters for carrying out such acts across America.
    ‘Trump’ Smeared All Over On Muslim Prayer Room At the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, many students discovered ‘Trump’ smeared all over the on the door of a Muslim prayer room. The university officials and the NYU Muslim Students Association made a statement on Facebook saying "Our campus is not immune to the bigotry that grips America”.
    'Whites Only,' 'White America' A student from Minnesota was shocked to see a racist graffiti spread across all over inside a bathroom. As the pictures suggest, “Go back to Africa” and “Make America great again” was also written on a toilet paper dispenser. The bathroom door was covered with graffiti, which stated ‘Whites only, White America’, and of course ‘Trump’.

    “I am not quite sure if what you meant is demonetise the old notes and introduce new notes instead. In the past demonetization has been thought off as a way of getting black money out of circulation. Because people then have to come and say "how do I have these ten crores in cash sitting in my safe" and they have to explain where they got the money from. It is often cited as a solution. Unfortunately, my sense is the clever find ways around it.
    They find ways to divide up their hoard into many smaller pieces. You do find that people who haven't thought of a way to convert black to white, throw it into the Hundi in some temples. I think there are ways around demonetization. It is not that easy to flush out the black money. Of course, a fair amount may be in the form of gold, therefore even harder to catch. I would focus more on the incentives to generate and retain black money. A lot of the incentives are on taxes.

    My sense is the current tax rate in this country is, for the most part, reasonable. We have a reasonable tax regime, for example, the maximum tax rate on high incomes is 33%, in the US it is already 39% plus State taxes, etc., it takes it to near 50. We are actually lower than many industrial countries. Given that, there is no reason why everybody who should pay taxes is not paying taxes. I would focus more on tracking data and better tax administration to get at where money is not being declared. I think it is very hard in this modern economy to hide your money that easily.
    He is missed by many, while others believe he is gone for good. Well, to each his own, what else can we say?

    When Avinash Iragavarapu, an MBA graduate from the prestigious IIM (Indian Institute of Management), Lucknow came to Arizona in 2014; little did he know that he would one day change the entire world’s scenario and nope we are not exaggerating at all. After all, he is the one who helped Donald Trump win the US Presidential elections.  
    His interest in politics isn’t something new. Back in India, he quit his job with HCL Technologies in Delhi and joined the YSR Congress Party-led by Jagan Mohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh. In 2014, he decided to visit his wife who was studying in Chantel and it was there he shook hands with his golden political future.

    Avinash spotted a signboard on the American local elections that further led him to Doug Ducey, the state’s former treasurer. Ducey was contesting for a Republican Party nomination and Avinash used his data crunching skills to predict Ducey’s win. Guess what, he turned out to be right. “He has political intuition”, Robert Graham, state GOP party chairman, told the local media. Graham was super impressed with his skills and even made him the party data director. 
    Arizona is traditionally a Republican state and was important for Trump’s victory because no other Democrat has won the state except Bill Clinton in 1996 and Avinash’s skills took him a few inches closer to this iconic victory. What’s surprising is that despite his anti-India comments and constant bashing, he found support among Indian-Americans. In fact, Avinash even called Trump a “warm” and “welcoming” person.

    Calling him a smart businessman, Avinash said, “He is not a traditional candidate. He has rewritten all the rules in political campaigning. He spent the least amount of money in the primary elections. He knows how to market himself. He got a $2 billion worth free media coverage. No amount of spend can match that advantage,” he further added.
    “I have met Donald Trump personally. He knows I am from India. He’s a totally fine person, and he’s embraced me with open arms. He has only spoken out against illegal immigration,” said Avinash. 
    Well, thanks to Avinash, Trump won Arizona and also the 47 delegates that come with it. Does this mean that, although indirectly, India did play a pivotal role in the US elections?
