Tim Paine has become one of the many Australian cricketers in the last half a decade to hold a press conference, apologise for his actions that have “brought shame to Cricket Australia and the game itself” before announcing his resignation from the role he was entrusted with.

In Paine’s case, it was the issue of “sexting” or sharing sexual messages with one of his coworkers that got leaked on the internet, causing a huge backlash for the cricketer who has since stepped down from his role as the captain of the Australian Test cricket team.

"As a background on my decision, nearly four years ago, I was involved in a text exchange with a then-colleague. At the time, the exchange was the subject of a thorough CA Integrity Unit investigation, throughout which I fully participated in and openly participated in. That investigation and a Cricket Tasmania HR investigation at the same time found that there had been no breach of the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct,” said Paine.

And even though CA defined the whole issue as a "sexting incident involving a former Cricket Tasmania employee in 2017", Paine did not refuse to reveal the nature of these messages. However, it wasn’t long after Paine’s admission of guilt and resignation from his role that the messages somehow managed to make it online.

In yet another thread of messages, Paine shares an indecent picture of his with the coworker while telling them that he would get in trouble if that picture leaked and their coworker agreed.

Paine was made in-charge of the Australian Test team in 2018 when his teammate Steve Smith was banned for a year for the infamous Sandpapergate, in which the trio of Smith, David Warner and Camaroon Bancroft were found guilty of ball tampering against South Africa.

After becoming the captain of the squad, Paine had assured the people of Australia and the fans of international cricket that they would see a “new culture” within the team and that there was a need for them to improve their “behaviour”.

"I spoke to my wife and family at the time and am enormously grateful for their forgiveness and support. On reflection, my actions in 2017 do not meet the standard of an Australian cricket captain, or the wider community," he said in the press conference before handing over his duties and walking out of the conference with tears in his eyes.
