‘Not The Way To Play’ Gavaskar Blasts Pant, Says Dravid Must've Given Him ‘Bamboo’

It is not easy to be Rishabh Pant with so many eyeballs consistently following you, waiting to pounce on your one mistake.

The young wicket-keeper, lately, has been under the firing line of many cricket experts for his outrageous shot selection and when he threw his wicket away to Kagiso Rabada in Johannesburg, many have been calling for his head.

The criticism that started from his statemate Gautam Gambhir has now reached one of the most renowned voices in cricket -Sunil Gavaskar.

The legendary cricketer minced no words while blasting the youngster and said that this is not how one can succeed at the Test level.

Gavaskar was speaking at the Cricket Live show on Star Sports and the legendary India batter mentioned that the success Pant managed to get while playing in a similar way against England must be why he tried to take on the bowler so early in the innings.

Gavaskar added that with Rahul Dravid, the head coach of Team India, sitting in the change room, he is certain that Pant received a hearing once he walked back to the pavilion.

"This is something we saw against England, at the start of the series. When England came to India, he was jumping down the pitch and trying to hit James Anderson… he did that so well. But after that, he seems to think that is the only way to play. That is not the way to play and I am pretty certain that in the change room, Rahul Dravid would have given him a hearing, or as they say in cricket, Dravid must have given him a 'bamboo'," Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar further said that Pant should recall how he got runs in Australia by battling out the tough phases and then played his shots.

Had he tried to play the attacking shot after assessing the pitch, there was more chance of him being able to connect well.

Pant has failed to get going with the bat in the ongoing Test series in South Africa. He has scored just 59 runs in four innings at a lowly average of 14.75.

Having said that, the team seems to back the youngster and it is now up to Pant to repay the faith shown in him by the management.
