Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, who exchanged wedding vows with each other in 2005, shocked everyone by announcing their separation in 2021 after 15 years of marriage. The duo announced the news in July last year in a joint statement citing that they're ending their relationship as husband and wife and will remain co-parents. 

Since then, both Aamir and Kiran have never talked about their divorce. However, months after their separation, the superstar has finally broken his silence and has revealed the reason behind parting ways with Kiran. 

In an interview with News18, Aamir finally revealed what actually triggered their divorce. He said, "Kiran and I love each other so much. We have a lot of respect and love for one another. But people don’t get this and I accept it because we don’t see it usually. Actually, Kiran and I realised that we like each other so much and consider one another family in the truest sense. Kiran and I are actually families. But our relationship of husband and wife experienced a certain change and we wanted to respect the institution of marriage. However, we are always going to be by each other’s side. We are working together. We live close by. But we are no longer husband and wife and that’s why we decided to call it quits". 

For the unversed, before Kiran, the Lagaan actor was married to Reena Dutta but they ended their relationship in 2002. In the latest interview, Aamir also clarified that he didn't parted ways with Reena because of Kiran. He said, "When Reena and I got separated, there was no one in my life. A lot of people think that Kiran and I met before my divorce from Reena but it’s not true. Kiran and I had met but we didn’t really know each other and we became friends much later".

Post Aamir's separation from Kiran too, there were speculations that the duo ended their marriage due to the actor's alleged affair with his Dangal co-star Fatima Sana Shaikh. Rumours also suggested that the superstar might announce his third marriage post the release of Laal Singh Chaddha. 

On being asked if any other relationship was the reason behind his divorce with Kiran, Aamir denied it and added, "No. There was no one back then, there is no one now".

On the career front, Aamir will next be seen in the official Hindi remake of Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump, titled Laal Singh Chaddha. Directed by Advait Chandan, the much-awaited movie stars Kareena Kapoor Khan as the leading lady. It is slated to hit the theatres on August 11.
