The WWE Universe was in absolute shock when in October last year, the one-time Universal Champion, Roman Reigns let the world know how he had Leukemia and had been fighting blood cancer for 11 years behind-the-scenes.
On a later October episode of Monday night Raw, the Samoan wrestler let the audience know that in order to battle the disease more intimately, he had to go away from the WWE for some time and had to give up his title in the process.
Breaking his character for maybe the very first time, Reigns had said: “My real name is Joe and I have been living with Leukemia for 11 years.”
People were crying and hurting but were united in support of the 'Big Dog'.
Thank you to everyone who's reached out...I can't put into words what it means to me.
Your energy and positivity motivate me to get better quickly to get back in the ring, but for now I'm going to spend time with my family and focus on health.
Thank you - Joe/Roman
But, Reigns didn't forget to mention that he is in no way retiring from WWE and once he was done “whooping Leukemia's ass,” he was going to be back on Raw, healthy as ever, to take what was rightfully his, the WWE Universal Championship.
Now, exactly four months since Reigns let the world in on his painful secret, WWE.com made an official statement saying that Reigns is set to make a comeback to the franchise show, albeit for one night, to address the update on his battle versus the cancer. WWE CEO, Vince McMahon too, took to Twitter with an update:February 21, 2019
Well, it looks like Reigns kept his word after all. Four months ago, 'The Guy' had said that he would soon be back to the ring, to 'his yard', as he so proudly claims it to be and Roman is finally going to be home.
A couple of weeks ago, former WWE wrestler and Hollywood star, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson had expressed his love for Reigns, his cousin, over his tireless war against Leukemia and how it had evolved Reigns' “state of mind”.
Very proud of him. His leukemia recovery has elevated his state of mind to a whole other level.
And it was fuuuun to go legit beast mode with my cousin in our movie where he plays my brother. #LetTheBodiesHitTheFloor #HobbsAndShaw AUG 2nd. https://t.co/bqpLFQC1Z1
In the process of defeating the disease, Reigns believes that his return to the WWE would not just be about wrestling and winning titles but will come with a purpose: “I am coming back because I want to show all of you, the whole world… that when life throws a curveball at me… I will always swing for the fences.”
Reigns' fans finally took a breath of fresh air and reacted in joy over the internet:
Hell yes the Big Dog returns. I hope his battle with leukemia is either over or almost there. Roman is missed. pic.twitter.com/E929lnSLCM— Mark Collins (@MarkCol14113961) February 21, 2019 February 21, 2019
