Remember the foldable phone which Xiaomi teased earlier this year? Yes, the “double folding smartphone” which the company's president Lin Bin showcased in a video? Well, it looks like it'll be the first foldable phone to arrive in India.
According to the investors in Xiaomi's supply chain who spoke to iGyaan, Xiaomi's foldable phone is said to make it to the Indian market as early as April or early June this year. Not just that, the phone is said to be priced at Rs. 74,999, which makes this report all the more interesting.
Yes, Rs. 74,999 does sound like an expensive affair for a Xiaomi phone, but it's worth pointing out that we're talking about a foldable phone. Other players competing in this space like Samsung & Huawei are selling their phones for as high as $2,000, which roughly translates to about Rs. 1.40 Lakh.
If Xiaomi manages to launch its foldable phone at such a price, then it'll be undercutting the price of its competition by half. In fact, Rs. 74,999 is less than what you would pay for something like an iPhone XR in the country.
One of the main differences between Xiaomi's and other foldable phone is said to be the display. Both Samsung and Huawei are using high-quality OLED panels for their devices, whereas Xiaomi is said to be using Visionox Technology OLED, which hasn't really been tested so far.
It's also worth pointing out that Xiaomi's foldable phone, unlike the Galaxy Fold, only has one screen with two foldable hinges on the left and right. Instead of switching back-n-forth between two screens, Xiaomi's phone will just fold backwards to become a smaller phone. With all that being said, there's no way to tell if these changes will compromise on quality.
In case you don't know, Samsung has also confirmed that it's launching the Galaxy Fold in India, so it looks like we're about to see a lot of buzz surrounding the foldable phones in the country this year.
